Hey guys. I am looking to put together a decent target style AR. I am looking to build the lower myself but i am looking to buy a complete upper(has to be post-ban). Obvioulsy i want to to be as accurate ass possible without going crazy on price, i am trying to keep it somewhat lower being my first build. I am looking for advice or ideas if anyone has built one in the past. I am looking for a standard A2 upper. It would be nice to buy a match upper with the floated A2 style hand guards but i dont want to have to feed high priced ammo through it everytime i shoot. I loved Going to the Range in the Marines and looking to get back into long range target shooting. Thanks for reading guys.
So youre looking to buy a complete A2 upper? BCM is a good route.
IMO you should look into buying a flat top upper, and then using a removable carry handle if you want the A2 iron sights. Later if you decide to use an optic you always have that choice. With an A2 not so much.
Thats good advice, the A2 reciever certainly limits options for the future.
I was thinking of that, but i have a stag m4 with a flat top already. But i do get what your saying if i wanted to scope it or something. Do you think the fast the carrying handle is removeable would make it less accurate? i was looking at this http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=599058&cm_mmc=Froogle-_-Gunsmithing%20-%20AR-15%20Upper%20Assemblies%20%26%20Barrels-_-PriceCompListing-_-599058 and this but not sure if i want spend that much and if i do i dont want to have to just feed it expensive ammo. http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=616914&cm_mmc=Froogle-_-Gunsmithing%20-%20AR-15%20Upper%20Assemblies%20%26%20Barrels-_-PriceCompListing-_-616914
I like the heavier barrels to
Jarhead, our issue rifles today have removable carry handles and are as/or more accurate than the A2’s of yesteryear.
As Belmont said go with the flattop. It opens your options up when you want to do optics. BCM is a good pretty cheap way to go. Too cheap you will just be buying junk.
The only problem with BCM is all the 20in uppers are sold out plus they are not legal in MA becuase my state sucks haha. It has to be post ban. The only ones i see im into are those DPMS ones.
If you want an A4 upper get the BCM when its in stock. Choose a muzzle brake of your choice and send it to ADCO to have it made AWB compliant.
I looked on the BCM site and i didnt see any A4 heavy uppers. Ill have to contact them and ask.
The closest your going to get to an A4 with a heavy barrel will be a SAM-R. Their not cheap though. You may want to build an upper with a flat top receiver and a 20" heavy barrel along with a DCM free float tube for A2 type handguards. All of this won’t be cheap, so unless your going to shoot matches, I suggest a A4 upper with a GI weight barrel.
As much as id like that, yea to pricey. I found a DPMS A4 style hbar. Might go with that.
Jarhead,
You are a new member here. I beg of you to please look around this site, and do some research before you buy. Now I will plead with you not to purchase anything from DPMS, especially an upper receiver.
Just say no to DPMS.
Ok ill try seeing when BCM will be back in stock and in the time i will look for another A4 upper.
Friends don’t let friends buy DPMS/OLY/Shitmaster/Stag/RRA/CMMG/…ETC!
HAHA doesnt leave me with much. i was going to say RRA has a 20in A4 with AWB compliant model.
There are far more mediocre to bad AR-15 manufacturers than excellent. There are many threads on this site that break it down in a number of different ways, but what it boils down to is you want a Colt, LMT, BCM, Daniel Defense, S&W, or Noveske. I’m sure I missed one or two of the good ones, but if you buy an upper from any of those manufacturers, rest assured you have an excellent upper. The differences in quality can be significant, and the dollar difference isn’t all that large with most. You see a lot of BCMs around this site because they have the smallest price premium over a mediocre AR without cutting any of the corners typical with those mediocre ARs.
I can understand that. I know what qaulity is and stuff when it comes to firearms. I am not trying to put together a wicked expensize AR or anything. I meen yea i want a decent shooting A4 style but im not looking to enter any matches or anything. I shot with worn out old Colts on the Marines and shot great with them. So i meen i can make it work. I do understand were the guys are coming from though, and i really appreciate the help.
