First AR - Lefty question

I am about to purchase my first AR - I am a lefty have a few questions
Two ? I’d like iput for>

  1. As a lefty and have shot others M&P and Colt ARs, for awhile now, I am not a fan of inhaling post firing gases. Would it be better to go with a standard gas Sig or a lefty AR? I’ve never had an issue with shells hitting me. But, every couple of rounds I seem to suck in some nasty post firing gas/crap.

  2. Although I don’t sell my fire arms often -is it better to purchase a standard AR regardless of direct vs. gas verses a lefty for resale. My handguns are M&Ps all configured left, but can be standard with a flip of the mag release.

I am a lefty, and I personally do not care for lefty rifles, it seems as their quality is always suspect and you pay more for the product. Give me an ambi charging handle, selector, and mag catch on a good righty rifle and i’m good.

As a lefty shooter, I agree with VIP3R. I do not own a left-side ejecting AR upper. I actually like having the ejection port in my peripheral vision; even though I shouldn’t have to rely on it. Never really noticed gas in the face except when I was shooting suppressed uppers.
All my uppers have ambi charging handles, and all my lowers have ambi safeties and norgon ambi-catch magazine releases.

I have to agree with everything stated above. I’m a lefty who shoots righty guns, and I’ve never had any problems. A quality ambi charging handle and safety are nice. I also have long arms, so I don’t shoot nose to charging handle which I’m sure helps the gas problem. If you shoot nose to charging handle, it doesn’t matter if it’s left or right configured you’re still going to catch a wiff of gas. Resale value is something I would consider too as VIP3R stated. It’s a lot harder to sell a Stag or Sig than it is a Colt or BCM.

All my AR’s have ambi charging handles and ambi safties. I really need to try an ambi mag release.

I’m a lefty and agree with everything said. Extra cost, difficulty finding replacement parts, and resale issues. I’ve never had an issue with gas in the face either.

Another lefty, and I use all right-handed guns. I do own one bolt action rifle that’s a lefty, but I got it more because it was significantly cheaper than going with the same gun right handed. I agree that there are ambi controls that make things nice though. I would rank the ambi controls that I find the most useful as

1-Charging Handle
2-Safety
3-Mag Release
4-Bolt Release

That is purely subjective list, but if I had to order parts as I got the money, that’s the order I would buy them (and I wouldn’t even get the ambi bolt release personally).

I’m also a lefty, and would vote skip the lefty AR. I run an ambi charging handle, ambi mag release, and ambi safety selector. With the ambi parts, the position of the bolt catch/release, and the ability to inspect the ejection port with the weapon shouldered makes it very lefty friendly. I think the only downside to shooting an AR lefty is the gas when shooting suppressed, and the forward assist digging into my chest when I leave it slung without body armor on.

I found that I always get carbon/ oil on my right arm from the ejection port, also a little on my face. I just do not really care. Though, I ruined a hoodie because of it, the right sleeve is stained black. :smiley:

As another lefty I’ll echo what others said. Have no problem with the way an AR is set up, never did. And I’ll take the Colt over any Sig

The bcm 44 charging handle is the way to go. I did tire of the brass to forearm issue and bought an arx. The ar hasn’t been out since.

That’s the first I’ve heard of it and never had it happen to me or know of any lefty it’s happened to.

If I do an aggressive thumb over rail grip/stance I get brass to the forearm.

I had one of those goofy left handed ARs for a while.

Just get a normal gun.

If you don’t like the smell of shooting find a new hobby or wear a promask.

If it makes you feel any better as a righty I still get nasty gas to the nostrils. it’s gonna happen, don’t try to stop it. unless you modify a charging handle or buy one designed to seal the gas away from your face.

Never had issues with brass hitting me or sucking gas. I don’t put my nose up the the charging handle though

Middy gun with light mounted to FSB puts my right arm out pretty far.

lefty here, no issues with my BCM’s and gas to the face unsupressed. even right handed will get some gas firing surpressed at least in my limited experience. nature of the beast i guess.

With the ratio of LH to RH folks in the world at around one in ten and the judging by the number of LH members above who prefer RH rifles I’d say from a marketing standpoint a LH gun would be a bad investment. If I were a south paw looking for an AR I would buy a KAC lower and pop a BCM upper on it. Depending on the upper you could do it for 15-1600 and have something you could sell in a heartbeat if you decided to.
