Hi,
So this is my first rifle. I’m purchasing it for home defense in a SHTF bug in scenario. I wouldn’t need any targeting capabilities past 300 meters. I’m looking at a BCM[emoji768] RECCE-16 KMR-A Carbine. Would this be an appropriate purchase? Thanks in advance!
That would be a fantastic purchase. BCM makes a damn good gun and gives you a lot more for the money than many other companies.

You don’t think it’s overkill for home defense? As long as I get a light weight round I shouldn’t have to worry about over penetration right? Hell, I think my 9mm CZ75 may penetrate more than an appropriate home defense AR round. I’m new so I’m not sure if my thinking is sound or not. Thanks again.
Your thinking, for the most part, is in line. In spite of the fact that it is repeated minute by minute that 556 will over penetrate in an HD situation, it’s simply false. The relatively light, high velocity projectiles don’t retain well upon impact with about anything.
I appreciate both comments. I’m going to start saving up for the BCM. Thank you.
Moved since this isn’t a Precision Semi-Auto topic.
BCM makes a great home defense weapon. Definitely isn’t over kill for that application. There is a reason why SWAT teams around the country have ditched the sub machine gun in favor of the carbine. That reason is effectiveness. If you are going to carry a weapon the size of a rifle you might as well shoot a rifle cartridge.
Dont forget a sling and a light as well. The light is mandatory and the sling is right behind it. Id also recommend a good optic such as a red dot or a LPVO (low powered variable optic, ie… a 1-4 scope). For purely home defense a red dot is a great option. Id suggest an Aimpoint as they are very reliable and battle tested.
As far as ammo goes your .223/5.56 defensive ammunition can be broken down into two main categories: The fragmenting and the expanding. Both have their merits and you should evaluate what characteristics you want and tailor your ammunition choice to your perceived needs.
The fragmenting rounds are usually just a variation of a varmint cartridge. Its very effective on bad guys and has low penetration through building materials. The down side is that it also has low penetration on bad guys so odd angle shots or penetrating an outstretched arm, like someone pointing a gun at you, can be lacking.
The expanding rounds mushroom out like a big game hunting bullet or a handgun hollow point. Its also very effective on bad guys and exhibits more penetration, though still usually less than handgun rounds. These rounds will penetrate intermediate barriers, like a column in your house the bad guy is using as cover/concealment, or the previously mentioned outstretched arm.
Great choice…you have to start somewhere and it can drive you crazy trying to sort out all the options. You can feel good about jumping into the water with this choice…enjoy.
Just keep in mind you will probably end up spending quite a bit a more money on:
Optic
Sling
Magazines
Ammo…lots of ammo. Lots.
Being my lightest AR the BCM is my go to rifle if the SHTF.
C-grunt- That’s a lot of very useful information. Thank you for taking the time to share it with me.
What does lots of ammo mean? 3-4K rounds?
There is no overkill, only success and failure.
For ammo, stick with a good hd or hunting round (69 or heavier otm, with 75/77 being preferred), fed fusion 62gr, gold dot 64 or 75gr. There’s more but those are the easy ones.
Then stock cheap stuff deep and start training.
