I am aware of the cleaning procedure involved with the 5.45 corrosive ammo. My intention would be to add an ultimak/Aimpoint H1 combo at some point, but I would like spend a little time running drills with a stock rifle before all the way in.
I am a cross dominant shooter. (pistols RH, rilfes LH) What is the best way to sling this rifle, including attachment points? Any disadvantage to the extended hinge point on the back of the receiver for the folding stock? Advantages/disadvantages for lefties and AK’s in general?
Lastly, any recommended accessories or component changes (mag holders, chest rigs, etc.)?
I’d honestly go with the same rifle in a fixed stock. That is a bastardized AKS-74 style stock that they attached in an effort to sell them out of their inventory…
The original AKS-74 side folding stock uses a different trunnion in the rear and has a locking point up front, and needs to be installed by someone who knows what they’re doing. That K-Var set up will add at least 1 1/2" to the LOP. Think of it like going from an M16A1 stock to a M16A2. The length of pull will be almost identical.
You won’t have any issues running an AK as a lefty. For a front sling point, you might want to look at the Blue Force Gear UWL and run it between the gas tube and the barrel.
I highly recommend the Blue Force Gear Vickers CAS. It’s an adjustable 2 pt. and works well.
After seeing that link, I know what you were talking about on the phone now…
I think Templar nailed it.
With the setup he described you’ll be able to sling the AK like I do my big AR (except opposite hand of course) and that works pretty well. And like 96 SS said you can buy the Ultimak with the cost difference.
Is the rear sling mount on this rifle reversible? Or does it just work for lefties with a little extra slack on a two point connection? The rifle in the youtube link has the rear sling mount towards the front of the stock rather than the butt. I’m curious how this would change how the rifle hangs.
Thanks for the products links. I have a few Blue Force Gear products already, but it’s always good to get specific application suggestions. Do you know how Vickers sets up his pistol and rifle mags to address the cross dominance issue, specifically speed reloads on the rifle to not interfere with his pistol?
The rear sling swivel on a fixed polymer stock is not reversible.
You’ve got a couple options…you can run a rear sling adapter, or you can loop the sling around the wrist of the buttstock. I’ve seen both work well for guys. I would personally go with the sling adapter because I like having the two points of attachment as far away from each other as possible, but that’s personal preference.
As far as a speed reload, I like the Raven Concealment kydex rig. You can order one left handed, and it should work for you pretty well.
Do you position your mags the same way for training classes, and simply add a chest rig for additional mags?
The reason I ask is the last carbine course I took I started off with a single AR mag on my right side at about 2 o’clock on a blue force padded belt setup. I took it off by the end of the class because it would get in the way when bending and moving. I can see how moving the mag to the four or five o’clock position would help with this, but I would still be fighting space/interference issues with my pistol at roughly the 3 o’clock position. I am also wonder if as the mag moves further around my back if speed gap between first mag on the belt versus first mag on a chest rig would close. If so then I might seriously consider consolidating all rifle mags to the chest and leaving my belt for pistol use only.
