First 80 rounds with Walther PPQ

I found an excellent condition used PPQ that a guy traded in with 2 other pistols for a rifle he had to have. I have no idea how many rounds were put through it but it was basically new. It came with everything: extra mag, all grip panels and box.

I put 80 rounds through it yesterday for test fire, strong hand, weak hand, tried to limp wrist using BH 115gr +P JHP and Fiochi 124 grain FMJ. No issues in function or feeding.

My first 5 rounds through it were in a group as tight as an HK P7 that I also fired, if that says anything about its accuracy potential. I am more of a rifle marksman but do ok with a pistol. I’m sure there are others who can really wring out its accuracy. I’ve fired enough different sidearms over the years to know when something is going to be easier than others at getting the tight clusters, and this one does it.

Pros:
-Accurate, esp with 124 gr (need to try some 147s running at moderate velocities)
-Ergonomic: I have monster hands…but it still fits
-Mags - well made, functioned fine, dropped free
-Trigger - very nice for striker fire - better feeling than my Glock 17L w/3.5 lb setup
-Excellent trigger reset
-Shoots to POA right out of the box

  • “Cleaned up and simplified” P99 operation

Cons:
-Need to get night sights on it (Are they the same as the P99’s???)
-Despite an ergonomic grip, the texture is a bit slippery. I found it shifting in my hands, especially after the +P loads. It bucks a bit more than the Glock 17 or 19 IMO, probably due to the grip angle. I’ll resort to some sort of adheasive tape.

  • Extra mags - Who has OEM mags???

The cons are easily fixed. If you get a chance to try one out, don’t hesitate. I was very impressed with its inherent accuracy.

I got it used for $479 so not sure what they are running new in your AO.

I think they are around $600 here. Good catch.

P99 Trijicon night sights work on the PPQ. Will post pics soon.

Not the greatest pic but here are the Trijicon P99 night sights and a DeSantis Speed holster. You will need a Glock front sight tool for the front sight. The rear sight slides right in. You will need to take out the windage screw out of the rear sight and put in into the Trij. rear sight. (right hand threaded). The rear sight detent will capture the rear sight and keep it into place.

$550 from G&R

G&R also has 15 rnd and 17rnd factory mags…not cheap, But that kinda goes with the territory here…I think you’ll find that the PPQ is very accurate out of the box…I’ve got about 1700 rnds on mine…No problems to date…They are excellant pistols, and IMO, very underrated.

Is the PPQ what the M&P should be out of the box, but has to be dragged thru an APEX catalouge to get close?

Glad you like the PPQ.I do too. I also find the grip a little slippery sometimes.Maybe a little more aggresive texture will help, but otherwise I like everything about this pistol. The grip actually reminds me more of a nice custom revolver grip more than an auto pistol.

number1old dog,I was just looking on line for night sights last night and was wondering about the Trij for the P99 and if it would work. Thanks for that tip, sir.

Pretty much, but, I think it’s actually much better. Ergo’s IMO are better, The trigger for example, is better, the reset is short and crisp, something you’ll never get from an M&P (I know, I have two,one has a Apex RAM installed) Accuracy… Out of the box, a PPQ will easily outshoot a stock M&P,maybe with a Bar-sto barrel, it’ll be almost as good…I guess it all boils down to how much $$ do you want to dump into the M&P…Let’s face it…Randy Lee and Apex Tactical, have singlehandly done more for the M&P than S&W did…

I’ve also installed the P99 trijicon’s on my PPQ, It was pretty easy to do, and I like the narrower notch on the rear sight…IMO the trijicon’s are about all they need…

Roger that ralph,thanks also.

I’ve been shooting my new one for a while now, great pistol. Very accurate, reliable, super trigger, very ergonomic. Added stippling to the front and back straps, helped it out a lot. I hope spare parts and different sights become more available down the road, that’s really the only thing that keeps it from being better than the Glock or M&P.

Just got mine a couple of days ago. The indoor range had it at $489. I have fired 200 rounds of mixed ammo and some reloads and there have been no problems. I am now looking for a holster and some spare mags. This gun is very accurate.

We have NS’s and factory mags in stock (15rd and 17rd).

Do you have any Raven holsters for the PPQ in stock?

Bought mine for $509 from them a week ago.

You just saved me the trouble of reposting

Talk to your local dealers and see what they’ll order you one for. I was going to get one from Buds and checked with a small local shop, their price ended up being about the same. Cost from a certain well known three letter distributor is around $460, some shops will not add much just to make a sale.

they are selling them locally for $650. to $675.00 here in atlanta
crazy.

Same price, in and near Vegas.
