Finishing up my build, what are the chances...

the headspace is off? I’m having a hell of a time getting the ejector retention roll pin out of the bolt. I’ve been through a roll pin punch that is now bent to shit, and it seems like it hasn’t even budged! I am using the proper tool and a bench vise, with no luck. I bought a Daniel Defense barrel and a Spikes Nickel Boron BCG and lower, and a Bravo Company upper, so I’m not using junk parts, but really want to get it out to shoot this weekend after 6 months of waiting during the build. What are the chances it’ll be ok and if not any suggestions on how I can proceed?

Why in hell did you do that? It’s gonna be just fine, but now that you messed with the ejector roll pin…

I don’t think the pin is messed up at all. The roll pin punch is what’s bent haha. I was trying to remove it to see if the bolt would close with the headspace gauge in place, as per the videos I’ve seen. But I can’t even get the pin to budge!

So you think the headspace is fine and I’m good to hit the range?

YES. Headspace is rarely an issue with correctly built AR’s using quality parts.

With quality parts from a reputable manufacturer, headspace is almost never an issue. However there are certain manufacturers and parts that I might be inclined to check out of past experience. If you feel the need to check it, the ejector isn’t that hard to take out. You need to relieve the pressure on the pin by pressing in on the ejector. This can be done with a case head. Leave in the extractor and place the lip of a case under the extractor and rock the case head flat which drives in the ejector. You need to hold this case head WHILE driving out the pin. It takes a bit of practice but isn’t too hard. Of course they make a tool for this now, but the case head is how we did it in the old days and is still sometimes faster. Be aware that mashing up a roll pin is not a good idea.
