Finally bought my AR!

I brought home a new Ar today, my first actually. I bought a stag model 3 with the plus package. The plus package give it 1x7 twist barrel, m16 bolt carrier, chrome bolt carrier, hp/mp tested bolt and barrel, heavy buffer, and two mags. I am very happy with the purchase. The trigger is surprisingly crisp. I have some cheaper sights on it now but plan on either a eotech or a low power scope.

I am planning on going to the range tomorrow but we are supposed get snow so I’ll see. But I can’t wait. I’ve shot my father’s many times but now that I have one to call my own it’s like shooting one for the first time again. Anyway here’s some pics. Don’t mind the dirty carpet and poor lighting. I couldn’t find a better background.

Congratulations.

I wouldn’t get wrapped up on getting an optic. Buy ammo. Buy mags. Shoot it 'til the ejection port blows off, and learn everything you can about your gun.

The Knowledge base threads will help you learn a lot about the platform, and how to get the most of out your carbine.

If you already had your mind made up, what was the point of asking people here for their opinion?

I still don’t know why everyone gets all bent out of shape over that thread. I had only asked if anyone knew of anything that is a common problem with the stags because I wasn’t able to find any online. It seems every post I make that thread comes up. Please don’t make me tye bad guy for asking a question and then buying a rifle with my money that some guys on here said to “buy a colt and don’t look back”

At least he’s showing a complete rifle and talking about shooting it, not just showing off an outlandish lower seeking acceptance from the masses. The dude’s excited about his first purchase, we’ve all been there.

Enjoy it OP, hope it’s a good shooter for you.

Sounds like you asked, got an answer and then ignored the answer. You asked the knowledge of this forum and then did not take the advice. I’m new here also, but I have been a member of other forums and the one thing I learned was to listen to the people that know what they are talking about. Most of the guys here have moved on from lesser AR’s and are not going to get super excited about your stag.

Before you waste money on an optic (Eotech) invest in a sling, light, and ammo. I would also suggest AimPoint over Eotech. Simple search answers any questions as to why.

Good advice.

The optics would be in the future. Probably about 6 months or more. I was reading up on slings. It seems like I may like single point better. But I’d have to try both. I have a light but I don’t have a mount yet. Is the magpul mount any good? Also was leaning towards a scope but I assume that you can buy magnifiers for the aimpoint just like you can a eotech right?

I like some magnification. Not a lot though like 4x max.

I don’t know what kind of background you have or anything, but from some of the questions I’ll assume this isn’t going to be any kind of duty or anything like that.

All of your questions have been answered before. Most people run either VCAS or VTAC 2 point slings. On the LE side of things, I run a lot of warrants, we have to sling weapons to go hands on or switch to a pistol to search more confined areas. A single point does nothing but add a wrecking ball (rifle) that will continuously bounce off your biscuits. A 2 point makes it easier to keep the weapon secured to your body and not bouncing around.

MagPul makes decent mounts. Another cheap light mount is the VTAC series, but it depends on the diameter of your light. The last flashlight style mount I had was a Haley Strategic because I wanted to push the light out further than my hand guard would allow. I don’t keep up with all the many different light mounts out there, but my most recent one has been Gear Sector and I’ve had good luck with them in the past also.

For a quality magnified optic, you’re going to spend a lot of money. If it’s something to be cool and shoot once every other month, then blow you’re money on whatever. Do not do that if you have any kind of self defense purpose, you’ll quickly learn that some on this forum take that stuff seriously and will take many classes and lush their gear. People see what breaks and what’s practical. There’s a reason the same things come around each time these questions are asked. Thick with an AimPoint PRO for around $400 down the line and buy a magnifier if you deem it necessary later. You should really focus on the basics before it turns into a Mr Potato Head filled with the latest and greatest Cheaper Than Dirt junk.

Read the stickies, buy ammo and mags. Shoot it and see if it gives you any issues. If this is your first AR, the most important thing you can do is run the snot out of that thing, and learn what works for you.

The best investment you can make is trigger time and instruction from a competent trainer.

My first AR was a Stag. Pretty good rifle. I moved on a few years ago and gave it to my son. It easily has 10,000 rounds, only issue has been a couple of extractors and a buffer spring. Personally, I’m not an adherent to the irons mantra and I’d get an RDS sooner rather than later. IMHO, the Aimpount vs Eotech argument is silly. I’d get a PRO for my first optic if, for no other reason, the fact that it’s less than $400, but Eotechs are excellent too. You can use an Eotech magnifier with either Eotech or Aimpoint RDS, but that purchase can wait. I agree, two point slings are better. Light mounts…I don’t keep a light on a rifle all the time. I like them to be quick detach so I use either a TLR-1s or a regular light on a VLTOR QD.

Enjoy your rifle. Stag was an OK choice. Not the best choice, but an OK choice.

Nice carbine! I remember how excited I was on my first & it is still a special gun to me. It has since reproduced & spends more time living the retired life locked up. Go shoot, hit some local matches & run through a basic carbine class. Your weekends and spare cash are now dedicated.

Do: shoot, stockpile some ammo/mags
Dont: (as previously mentioned) go to cheaper than dirt & buy fifty $10 items to hang off of it.

Congrats again.

Congratulations. Don’t run steel wolf through it. Enjoy the trigger time.

Why,

I know of three Stag model 3’s that run just fine on Wolf and Tula and the only change needed on one rifle was to change the buffer weight from a “H” down to a Carbine which took all of ten seconds to due at the range.

Steel gets a lot of bad rep. For plinking I use steel as it’s more cost effective, without problems.

That said it does require more cleaning so I am diligent about getting the carbon out as soon as I get home or at the range before I switch over to brass, which I’ve had stick after steel.

I though these kinda hey look at pics of my new gun threads were prohibited? Just saw 3 similar threads closed for some type of thing.

OHHHHHHHHHHHH ^ snap:dance3:EXACTLY! Enjoy the rifle! Congrats!

Those pics/post of an “outlandish lower” reminds me of the guy who purchased a transmission and shows it off online, but has yet to purchase a car to put it in. AWESOME

Thanks guys. Unfortunately it’s snowing out again so looks like I won’t be going to the range today. So a trip to cabelas is in order for some more ammo. I will probably pick up a few pmags as well. But I’m half tempted to wait until the gun show in march for the mags and sling.

Most of the time a gun show is the absolute worst place to buy magazines. I don’t think I’ve ever seen them cheaper than what you can find online and normally, more expensive.

I’d use the site sponsors listed at the top of the page or another reputable company like Primary Weapons, DSG Arms, Palmetto State (if you aren’t in a rush) or Rainier to name a few.
