Feeding the Beast - Precision Rifle Ammo

(Tried the search feature but only got the white screen of death)

Given the trinity of rifle, optic and ammo in precision rifle shooting, I’ve gotten the first two finished, now I need to start investing in ammunition.

Since precision rifle is about consistency, I’m not going to make a distinction between training and defensive ammo. I’m going to train with what I will use and want to start buying what I can, when I can. I want to get to at least a couple of precision classes in the coming year.

To that end, I’m not looking for one particular brand, but in the interest of collecting dope, I’d appreciate recommendations on up to three consistent brand that offer similar/consistent loads that I can start buying preferably in bulk and gather brass for reloading.

Ideally I’d like to keep it <$1.50/round (the under-rer the better). As much consistency in ballistic performance as possible between them. Terminal performance should be adequate for human and animal targets. No coatings or anything that will ruin hunted meat. 168-175gr. projectile. I’m open to BTHP or other types of projectiles.

I’ve seen various nations’ production of M118 (Bosnia, Lithuania etc.) at $0.89/round but I wasn’t sure how consistent things were between M118 manufacturers or if NATO spec was so strictly adhered to that it doesn’t matter which M118 is procured or if there was a significantly better option for a marginal increase in price.

Any input is appreciated.

One of the most accurate factory .308 loads I’ve ever fired from a bolt gun is Federal 168 grain Gold Medal Match. These use the Sierra Match King bullet. When the Sierra 175 came out, the 168s sort of fell out of favor with the long range precision crowd, but for pure accuracy, the 168s are tough to beat.

As far as reloading, do yourself a favor and buy Lapua brass up front.

One round I’ve come across is that TAP 165gr Barrier.

Any thoughts/observations about accuracy/consistency with this round?
