Feeding issues resolved (I hope)

Although my previous thread about my issues with rounds getting stuck in the feed ramps was blocked, I was asked to report back after trying a few things. I went to the store and picked up a new buffer spring and measured it there before taking it home. My current spring length was 10.5 but the new one is 10.75. I figured for $4.50 I wasn’t going to lose much if it didn’t work but they even told me I could return it if it didn’t fix my issues. I also grabbed some snap caps and was on my way. After installing the new spring and cycling the action till my fingers went numb, I was only able to replicate the malfunction once however I think I either didn’t pull the charging handle back all the way or slightly rode it on release. I cycled the action a zillion more times to make sure but had no problems afterward. I guess a trip to the range is going to be the only way to really tell if my issue is resolved but it’s looking good so far.

My only question at this point is: would the material of the round have an effect on this issue? My malfunctions were happening with copper tips (obviously) however the snap caps I’m using are aluminum. Think it would make a significant difference?

Shoot the gun. Manually cycling anything through an AR tells you almost nothing about real function.

probably a stupid question, but any luck using different magazines? or did the issue still present itself, before the new spring install.

Malfunction happened with all my mags.

I would have to agree with shooting the gun to make sure however I was able to replicate the same malfunction by hand cycling that I was experiencing while shooting.

The above statement by markm is your best advice. Yes the projectile material, weight etc. can affect cycling, but cycling by hand is no where near the same as the firearms cycling when a cartridge is fired.

Shoot the gun and see what happens.

Amen to that as I found out last week.

I’m hoping to get to the range soon and test it out with live ammo. All I was saying was that there was a great improvement with the new spring over what I was experiencing a few days ago.
