Is the Lake City brass used in Federal’s XM193 new and just discolored because of the annealing process or has it been fired before? Thanks for the help I have a couple thousands of these cases laying around and think its about time to start reloading.
rolltide 13,
Thats a good question when I received our department ammo. order this year the XM-193 brass looked like once fired brass. When we started loading them into mags. for training our hands looked like we had just finished rebuilding an engine, There seems to be some type of lubricant on the cases and it transfers to your hands everytime you handle a round. I know a neighboring department had the same problem with recently purchased XM-193 as well, they all work properly but they are a real mess to handle. Are you having the same issues ? It almost looks like some type of graphite lube on the cases.
Federal XM193 is new manufacture ammo.
If, by discoloration, you are referring to the darker neck/shoulder area that is due to annealing.
How do you know that this brass was actually from XM193?
Usually you can tell if LC brass has been reloaded by the lack of discoloration from annealing and no primer crimp.
IMO - inpspect it and, if good, process and load.
I know the ammo I received was not reloaded, I was curious to see if the OP observed the lubricant type substance on the cases that were on our ammo. I just thought it was strange that two neighboring departments purchased ammo from the same supplier on a state contract and it all appeared to be coated with what appears to be a graphite based lube. This is all brand new XM-193 drop shipped right from Federal
