Federal 62 gr TBBC .223 against laminate auto glass

I took a two day agency carbine class last week and was fortunate enough to shoot our agency duty round, the federal 62gr TBBC in .223 pressure, through some laminate auto windshield glass.

I wasn’t able to take pix or video because it happened too fast.

I was the first one to put one through the windshield. 1997 GMC Jimmy 4d. No deviation from point of aim at all. Straight through into the rear tailgate. It cut a round, yet expanded hole through both seat backs and became lodged in the rear lift gate.

All subsequent shots had the same effect. Point of aim, point of impact…no hold overs.

Distance shot at?

I have found that pretty much all shots from the outside of a vehicle, to the inside of a vehicle through the windshield will not really deviate that much.

The biggest variation comes from pistol ammo fired from inside out through the windshield.

25-28 yards shooting head on into the vehicle.

As for pistol bullets, do you find that .45 deviates more than 9mm? I have found that the +P 200 gr .45 gold dots deviate more than the +P 124 gr 9mm gold dots when going through laminate glass.

Totally depends on ammo. Ball deviates the least, hollowpoints tend to break up.

A few years ago I fired a Federal 62 grain bonded straight on thru a windshield during a range exercise. I forgot mechanical offset and the bullet struck the steering wheel rim (mid-80s Chev) and vaporized. Sent some powdery fragments into the target set up in the drivers seat. Other than that, I recall they penetrated glass and car body pretty well.
