That’s actually pretty creative idea. I don’t know if some attorney will try to claim entrapment etc, but props for originality:
FBI Builds, Sells Fake Encryption App To Lure in Criminals
For two years, criminals all over the world thought they were communicating on an encrypted chat and communications app called ANOM. Used by drug and crime syndicates in over 100 countries, the service allowed for apparently secure coordination for drug deals, shipments, money laundering, and a long list of other illicit uses.
But not only were the FBI and other global law enforcement agencies listening in — ANOM was their creation.
In a worldwide sweep announced Tuesday, law enforcement agencies on at least three continents made 800 arrests, seized 30 tons of street drugs, and disrupted the leadership of major criminal organizations, including Italian organized crime, US motorcycle gangs, international drug trafficking organizations, and many others.
Entrapment defense would strain credulity, as no one was enticed into an illegal arrangement, or even offered illicit goods. There was nothing illegal about the phones themselves, just that they were compromised.
I think the bigger issue would be wiretap warrants. There must have been at least one or two people who just wanted secure a communication platform.
All the second in commands would have been on ANOM that very night trying to figure out who talked and who needs to get whacked as a consequence. Shit like that is where you play the long game of intel / counter intel. Too many ass wipes want to brag about what they did in the short term.
Anom could have simply claimed they had a small level security breach and offered a free download patch and an upgrade to platinum membership services. It could have been better than Anus computers.
I understand, but I look at this and then I remind myself of some of the shenanigan’s these guys get in to without the oversight of adult supervision.
I’m all about good intel, but really, they’re trying to play “James Bond” and mostly what we need is some “Wyatt Earp” the FBI should play within our borders and get a bit more hands on.
It’s frightening to me the efforts the FBI can go to catching international criminals. I didn’t even know they had that kinda jurisdiction. Yet when someone literally calls their agency and drops a laptop on their desk, its crickets.
You’d think at some point they would end up investigating a democrat at least on accident.
Exactly. The Taliban had about eradicated opium production. Enter Bush… opium production soared to record levels flooding the world with cheap heroin.
After 911, do you remember the PSA TV spots about the businessman in a bar buying drugs? The message was that the businessman was supporting the drug trade which supported terrorists. The PSAs were soon dropped as the Afghan poppy fields flourished.
