Reliability: I do not own an AR10, but know many who have and their rifles have not been as reliable as either FAL or Springer
Mag Availability/Quality: AR10 Mags are expensive and very few options. I know I paid $8 for 20 round factory mags from DSA
Quality: I’d take a Noveske or LaRue AR10, don’t get me wrong…but there is alot of crap floating out there. Not sure the design is as proven as some. Call this one a draw.
Accuracy: it really depends…I would say they are all potentially very capable shooters. I know my DSA is <MOA (16") and that Springers are used as snipers…call this one a draw
“Battle Proven”: Without question, AR10 lags way behind. I know there are some (limited) examples, but a few specialized operators does not pass muster (just look to the debates over HK/LWRC piston guns)
I’ll give you that the idea is nice, there are nice AR10 examples out there…IMHO FAL all the way (in a to hell and back 7.62/.308 shooter)
Seriously? I’ve been shooting FAL’s for a LONG time and they are by far my favorite battle rifle from the Cold War era. However, I’ve yet to hear of a sub-MOA version. I’ve seen some custom Vandenberg FAL’s that will consistently shoot under 2MOA with handloads, but that’s the best I’ve ever heard of. FAL’s are fantastic rifles that are utterly reliable and built like anvils…but accuracy has never been their forte.
For decades, the M14/M1A ruled the roost at the Nat’l Matches. I never saw an FAL on the line.

DSA makes a better FAL than FN did.
For the knee-jerkers, that is not to say FN FAL’s are crap, just that they are simply not as good and not as well built as what DSA produces in their SA58 line.
The FAL has emerged, in some of its incarnations as a highly accuarate and durable .308 platform that can compete with many of the best in the .308 semiauto class.
It’s the “right arm of the free world” for christ sake.
I’d take the SA58.

I have own ARs, AKs, M1As, XCRs, and FALs. If I had to only have two guns it would be the XCR and FAL. If I could only own one it would be the FAL. The FAL is the most overbuilt rugged rifle I have used and when you touch something with 145-170 grains of .30cal it goes down HARD and there is rarely a need for a second shot.
Get the DSA, but be prepared for a wait if you order it from them, last I heard they were currently backlogged over a year. I found this little beauty at my favorite bang shop lightly used and I can’t keep my hands off it. Gun Broker is also a good place to find one if you have no tolerance for waiting.
If you have to get an M14 style rifle get the LRB and be done with it. It is the only MilSpec M14 rifle made today, and the fit and finish is truly a thing to behold.
Between the two options, I would choose the FAL over the Springfield M1A since it is a much better value. By the time you upgrade the parts to USGI on the M1A, you will have spent $2,000 - $2,500 depending on the parts upgraded. If you go with something closer to a real M-14 like the LRB, it will cost ~$3,000. In contrast you could buy TWO Steyr based STG-58’s from DSA for $2,400. My Scout M1A was fun to shoot at the range but I would never consider it for defensive use when in stock form.
DSA hands down. Though like KillSwitch if I were to buy a M-14 clone I’d buy an LRB. Though for the money I’d go with the DSA. LRB’s are $$

Talk is cheap. It’s as simple as that. In the firearms community you hear a lot of talk, and wildly diverse opinions abound. Most of it comes from well meaning people who honestly believe in what they’re espousing. However, all too often when put to the test there’s little more than words to back up what they’re saying. Recently though one company, DSA Inc. of Barrington, Ill., backed up their words by putting one of their rifles, and their reputation, on the line.
DSA Inc. claims to make the finest FAL rifles available. They also feel the FAL is tougher and more reliable than other, direct gas impingement designs. So after listening to them for a bit I challenged them to a 5,000 round endurance test to prove it. They responded by offering to not only supply a rifle and 250 magazines, but to go 10,000 rounds instead. We had us a horse race.

I have been waiting for a good 7.62 auto, and this just might be my answer.
Disclaimer- I know about as much about FALs as I do about breast augmentation- I like the way they look and feel, but that’s about all the facts I know.
FtS…DSA makes a hell of a nice FAL, but I would avoid the short gas system in a working gun and stick with the same gas system FN used for all those years.
I’d also stick with an 18" barrel. The 16" are useable but FN settled on a 17.75" barrel for their Para carbines, and they work just as well as the full size rifle.
