F Class Shooters-> Scopes?

To the F Class shooters out there.

What scope do you run on your rifle and why did you choose it?

There is a chance I may be able to try this type of shooting out and I am unfamiliar with the scopes traditionally used in this class. I am mounting on a Savage 12 Series ftr (.308).

Ok. Let me rephrase…I may have to repost this in the optics forum…

These Nightforce scopes are a bit out of my league for pricing. What other options?

And I hear that having ample magnification is good. I read most people have scopes that reach 25 to even 40+X?
Is that generally true?

I sold 3 well used carbines and used the money to purchase a Nightforce 5.5x22-50mm scope with zero stop and a EGW 20 MOA scope base. I dragged my feet for a long time before making the purchase. After shooting a few 1,000 yard matches, I regret not purchasing the scope a few years ago. A 3x15 power scope would have been sufficient for shooting 1,000 yards, but I have no regrets buying the 5.5x22 scope.

I purchased the scope from Euro Optics and would buy another scope from them in a heartbeat.

Nice Scope…I plan on saving for one…I have some other optics I can sell off to make room for a Nightforce. May take a while, but I may just use my Luepold to learn for now…save my money for the big gun…

I’m going to guess you’ll see a lot of recommendations for Nightforce, and I have nothing bad to say about them. However, due to the tactically oriented focus of this site, I think a lot of features sought after in a scope here are unnecessary for F-class(FFP, zero stop). I have a Sightron SIII 10-50x60 with fine crosshair on both my F-open and F-tr rifles. New ones can be had <$1k if you know where to look, got my second one used for $825. Clarity is good and plenty of magnification, though i must admit I have no experience with better scopes at equivalent power levels. I’ve only shot 5 matches so far, and there are at least a dozen variables I have been playing with in search of better scores, the scope is not one of them and to me seems very good for the money.

Hi SJ:

Thanks for the recommendation. Based on a lot of advice here and elsewhere, I agree that the Sightron sounds like my best bet. Like you said, its for benchrest. I’m putting it on my Savage 12 F/TR. If you dont mind me asking you another question, 60mm is pretty large, and a great thing to have for higher magnification. I bought a EGW F class mount 20 MOA. Is that going to be OK for scope clearance? Im just a bit concerned it will fit!

Thanks,

Mike

Consider taking a look at precisionrifleblog, they’re in the process of posting a very in depth and scientific review of like 20 scopes of at least 18x power.

The tests they’ve done are impressive in that they did them double blind, used great set ups, and had a lot of input from industry experts on how to create the tests.
