I have an extended ADM scope mount on my .223 AR and having the glass closer to me wouldn’t work (I shoot nose to charging handle). I know AR’s in 308 are larger and I’m looking for holiday sales/deals on mounts.
That said, do those of you with AR’s in 308 find you need/prefer the same scope mount as your 223 setups? I’m hoping to get it right on my first purchase and don’t know anyone local with a 308 and variable glass.
I have the same set up for the FN SCAR 17 and SCAR 16. ADM Scout ( FDE Noveske version) holding a Leupold 1-6 VX-6 with Red Dot. Don’t ask much I’ve spent with a world of different set ups until I’ve settled here…no regrets as the manual of arms for muscle memory, visual pic, etc… is always the same. I use a standard ADM Recon on my LMT MWS with the reasoning that while I don’t really need the cantilever with the LMT’s monolithic receiver, having it allows me to utilize the scope/mount across other AR’s that are not monolithic.
Thanks guys but my question isn’t about what brand mount to get. It’s about what eye relief. And it’s also specific to the AR platform so I don’t see any applicability to the SCAR.
Maybe I didn’t explain my question well enough. I am trying to determine if the eye relief is the same going from a 223 to a 308 in the AR. I use the Recon X from ADM on my 223. Does that mean I should do the same with the 308? Or can I use a traditional mount or the middle setup like the ADM/Noveske mount in my first post. This will be for a 1-6 optic.

Without knowing the rifle and optic combo it’s hard to say for sure which mount you need.
I gave you the reason for my choice.
With a nose to charging handle shooting stance if you need a cantilevered mount on your 5.56 for proper eye relief I’d imagine you’d need one on your .308 also.
Why not try the optic from your 5.56 on the .308 and see?
On 7.62 gas-guns, I prefer the ocular lens of the scope to line up with the charging handle. Generally, a longer LOP (Length Of Pull) of similar length to a fixed A2 stock better facilitates precision shooting, especially from the prone. If you can comfortably get NTCH from the prone with an A2’ish LOP stock, then have at it. But it’s not for me, which is why I place the scope further back.
If you’re shooting with a short LOP, pushing the scope forward is obviously a good idea.
RD62, that’s my bad. I’ve been on NyQuil the last couple days and somehow saw cantilever as throw lever. Lol! I can’t try the mount I have because I won’t have the 308 for a few months. I was hoping to get a deal on a mount during the holidays but I may have to suck it up and wait.
a0cake, the rifle comes with a CTR but I prefer Vltor’s stocks. I might go for a PRS but I’ve had no issues with the Emod on my Recce gun. I haven’t compared the LOP to a fixed A2. I’m always up for learning how to do things better - especially from people like yourself who really shoot long distance. I’ve been shooting NTCH since Uncle Sam taught me that way in 1990. Of course that was with an A2 and fixed carry handle. This will be my first 308 so I don’t know what I don’t know.
