I just got back from breaking in a new CMMG upper with a 100rnds of Prvi M193. Afterward during cleaning, while stripping the bolt, I noticed that the extractor spring (heavy coil with black insert) was protruding at an angle from the extractor. I imagine that when seated it should protrude out perpendicular to the extractor.
It's off center by about 15 degrees. I took it out and the spring is a bit arched. The seat is machined flat. Is this normal with the heavy coil/ black insert setup? Sorry I don't have pics at the moment. For what it's worth the gun had no extraction problems but I don't know if the spring is out of spec and will cause problems down the road.
Sounds fishy. I replaced my CMMG extractor spring and insert with the set from the Bravo Company upgrade kit and kept my older set for backup. I don’t recall the spring being canted like that, so you may wish to buy one. They aren’t expensive.
Here’s the link. They are 5 bucks and include the rubber o-ring. You don’t need to install the o-ring, spring and insert will work just fine without it.
During installation the assembler may have twisted the spring against the direction of the spring coils rather than with the direction of the spring coils. This could have “unwound” the spring.
When you replace your unserviceable Extractor Spring with new:
Place the Extractor Insert wide flange down into the Extractor Spring pocket.
Drop the Extractor Spring down over top of the Spring Insert.
With your thumb, twist the Extractor Spring in the direction of the spring coils. This should start the spring into the pocket.
Flip the Extractor over, and using a hard/flat surface such as a table top, press down on the Extractor Spring. You should feel and/or hear a slight “click”. Your Extractor Spring is now installed.
Leave the Extractor and Insert installed during PMCS, there’s no reason to remove it during routine maintenance or cleaning.
