So, what do you folks think about the Trijicon 1x24 Reflex Dual Illuminated Sight? Opinions? Pics? Experiences?
I’ve only played with them in gunshops, but I will say that I wasn’t very impressed. One I looked at would wash out if I looked out of the gunshop and aimed it a building with the sun shining on it. I also just looked at one in another gunstore and I didn’t like that the dot(maybe a chevron?) was so blurry. I’ve heard better things about the RX30 reflex though. The reflex sights seem like a neat idea, but I like my aimpoints more. I think USMC03 talks about them in the sticky at the top of the page as well.
I took one on deployment in 02 and 03 and for the most part it worked okay. The RX30 is a MUCH better optic and would be my choice of the two.
IMO the RX09 is still one of the best optics available. The 14 MOA chevron is an outstanding all around reticule pattern. I think it is the Rifleman’s red dot.
In the woods the RX09 is superior - especially at dawn and dusk. It is also very good for general outdoor shooting.
However, the washout thing is a real problem in urban operations. With the RX09 you can overcome a lot of this by using the matchstick chem lights. Or, you can use a large tritium vial that is about the same size.
The RX30’s appear to have fixed a lot of the washout issues. But, unless they are offered with a chevron reticule I have no use for it.
How well does a tritium vial work? Something I wish trijicon should do is make a led add-on for the RX09 that would at least partially fit in the chem light compartment. Something like a poor man’s tripower.
I’ve “played” with the RX-series of optics, but do not own one, nor have shot with one.
Let me preface what I’m about to say with the caveat that Trijicon is my favourite flavour of optic. I absolutely love what they make, but I think their lineup could be expanded with a few tweaks.
My two cents:
Here’s the skinny. The dual-illumination is awesome on Triji’s stuff. I currently have an TX30 that I’m totally in love with. During daylight, the fibre optic element provides as much reticle illumination as the battery does.
The tritium is way, way too dull on the TX30 to even be considered an illumination source, UNLESS you’re sporting NV, which I am not, so it’s rendered totally useless. If you’re operating in total blackness, it can be perceived, but if you flick a lamp on for even a split second, or even have full moonlight, it’s instant washout.
The battery backup is awesome, I just wish it had a longer life.
I believe that Trijicon would outsell every competitor if they’d offer all their optics with the same setup as the TX30.
- Tritium illumination
- Fibre optic illumination
- On-call battery backup
If they had all three, you’d have a triple-redundant system on the most important accessory for your blaster; your optic.
Trijicon should make the battery backup mandatory on every one of their sights. If they did this, I don’t believe they’d have any competition.
I can’t speak highly enough about how the fibre optic works in outdoor environs.
With the battery backup on their other optics, MOUT and starlight operations wouldn’t be a hassle, and every contingency could be handled by the optic. Even if two of the three systems failed, you’d still have SOMETHING to work with. On all other optics, if one system goes down, you’re done.
I think the “Tri-Power” concept is pure genius, and allows for the flexibility for the optic to adapt to any situation.
My gripes about the TX30 would be to offer two versions of the tritium element:
- NV “ready”
- Non-NV
This would allow for the tritium to be worthwhile to us non .mil end-users.
I think the triple power source option is way ahead of its time, and if this could become standard fare on ALL Trijicon’s offerings, I think they’d dominate the market.
The Landlord sure likes his Triji !!! ![]()
But having used both the RX01/09 and the newer RX30 I can say the 30 series is superior in EVERY way possible.
