I’ve heard some crazy things about this knife, in terms of toughness. Has anyone had anyone used one?
Used. In real life scenarios. Not “I have one in my BOB and it rocks”.
What have you heard?
A buddy told me about a video of a guy sticking one in a vice and hitting it repeatedly with a bat.
EDIT: I’m thinking it was this page (at the bottom)
Holy Crap…
This looks like “almost” exactly what I have been looking for.
The blade looks a hair short, but I have been reading reviews for the last hour on this thing. Most are outstanding. There are some minor flaws such as the serrations being left handed, bit for the most part, this looks like a great blade.
$70.00 with free shipping right now on Amazon… Hmmmm…
I am really thinking hard about this…
Edited to add… Heck with it… I hate this site… I just bought the darn thing. I’ve been looking for a good field knife. For $70 shipped, this seems too good to be true. I ordered the black infantry version. From what I saw on knifetests.com, this will do anything that I need. I don’t see myself trying to cut through 1/4 inch steel with it, so what the heck… I also went through 7+ pages of amazon reviews. 95% very positive reviews.
I plan on using this knife, not letting it gather dust. Thanks for the pointer.
I got mine from here, it’s the best price I have been able to find on these knives. Though when I got mine a few years back they were going for $59. LA Police Gear offers them in CB, FG, and black.
They are great little tough knives, I keep one in the BOB that I keep in my truck and one in the BOB in my better half’s car.
yeah. but understand that knife he tested was made from Sandvik 12C27 stainless steel. Gerber made a change to 420HC. I don’t know if it for better or worse but smarter people than me were claiming it is a downgrade…
did you get the cute little shroud/seat belt cutter rescue knife that comes with the original A.S.E.K/ knives at this price?
Yeap, it rides in my truck’s console in the event I need to cut a seat belt.
OK, I just reread - you got yours a while back? do you know if they ship with that rescue knife now?
if you just got it recently, can you do me a favor? can you look at the packaging, if you still have it, and see what it says the steel is that this is made from. they were originally made with 12C27 stainless but the website says 420HC.
my son got one awhile back and it came with the Sandvik steel blade. I would get one at that price if I knew it came with the better steel…
No can do as I purchased mine about two years ago now. Not sure if LA Police Gear still offers the seat belt cutter or not with their ASEK. Shoot’em an email and they well confirm it for you.
Mini-Review:
The knife is very sharp, and does an excellent of job of sitting in my BoB and not cutting anything except air when I get it out to mess around with it. ![]()
i bought one a couple years ago for a deployment and it worked great did everything i needed it to and more. since ive been home i been using it when i go camping for batoning wood everything else you do when camping. so yeah its a great knife and i will end up with another one probably soon.
Just got it in the mail… I’m impressed. Obviously, I have not yet gone out and done anything with it, but it seems like a great blade.
I got the black, infantry version. Note, this version did not come with the seat belt cutter, but with a 5" sharp blade, I’m not sure I need an “additional” belt cutter. The sheath seems very well built, and came with both leg straps.
In a nutshell, I am very impressed with the knife so far. It is heavy, sharp, and very well balanced. It is by no means, cute, or a girly-girl knife. It seems to be high quality, and built well. If the steel is above average, I am sure that it will hold up well. I wish that it were an inch or two longer, but it will more than suffice.
If you want more information, I suggest reading the numerous reviews on amazon.com. They seem to be about 90% spot on. This is not the perfect “Rambo” type, build a three story house out of solid rock blade… But for $70 shipped, it is a great deal. I would have easily paid $50 more for it.
do you still have the box? can you look and tell what kind of steel it states the knife is made from?
and no, only the A.S.E.K knives included the rescue knife. does the sheath have the blade sharpener as well?
It does not say what kind of steel anywhere on the packaging or knife. Unless I am missing something. I have looked all over and there is nothing there. The only marking on the box other than the gerber brand insignia, is the product description in this picture. No mention on the type of steel. Gerbers website tech specs do say that it is 420HC, given this exact model number.
Yes, the sheath has the blade sharpener. Honestly, the sheath, and subsequent carrying utility really makes this a wholly sh*t combination. You can wear it on a vest, your belt, strap it on your calf or boot like a dive knife, or simply leave it in a pack. The infantry package comes with everything except the seat belt cutter. What the heck though… I bet the knife will cut a seat belt. ![]()
There are conflicting reports about the infantry version coming with BOTH calf straps. Mine DID come with both calf straps.
What is the difference between the A.S.E.K. and the LMF II? Or the Prodigy for that matter? I can see the Prodigy has a slightly shorter handle. Other than that all three seem pretty much the same to me. Reason for differnce in price?
initially, the A.S.E.K. included the rescue knife/seatbelt cutter, the Infantry model did not. the Prodigy is a smaller/thinner/lighter version with just a simple kydex sheath on a nylon molle system with no sharpener and a single flimsy leg strap.
I got my son a Prodigy when they were on sale for $39 and for that price it is easily one of the best values I have seen out there. even at $50 it is still one heck of a knife, just not the full-out “carve your way out of a tank” type knives.
and btw, his Prodigy does say that it is made from 12C27 Sandvik steel on the box. I may get another…
I have one that I used for kayaking/camping, is chops well and is sturdy doing ANYTHING!
have had mine for a year or two. Nice knife for the price. My only complaint is the sheath. Once the straps are undone - the retention system is a bitch to overcome in order to draw the knife. Certainly a two hand operation on mine. I’ve whittled away at it - and it’s still pretty damned tight. Also mars the blade - not that it really matters. OTOH - if you want a knife that WILL NOT come out of the sheath unless you want it out - then this is your knife:)
