I often toy with the idea of just going back to being a Fudd.

Selling off all my AR and Glock 19s and all my magazines/spare parts/red dot optics/ammo/etc and invest in a couple of sporter weight Remington 700s in .308 and .223 and stick a couple of basic Leupold “scopes” on them.

Throw in a couple of J-frame Airweight revolvers and go back to just using my guns and not thinking about them all the time.

Kind of like being the guy in the zombie apocalypse shows/movies that you like to feel disgusted by because he wasn’t better “prepared”.:smiley:

No longer thinking about how I don’t train enough for something that will probably never ever happen to me and if it did, I would probably get shot before I could even do anything.

Anyone else ever get that urge?

I am actually somewhat serious about this.

I did that, sorta.

I got up to about 30 guns. I had everything everything. Long range tactical bolt guns. PVS14, PEQ15, Suppressed SCAR 17 with Acog, so many glocks I lost count. I had over 150 AR magazines at one point.

All that I own now are two suppressed AR15s (12.5" and 10.3") w/ 50 magazines, a G19 and a G26, a S&W 642 and a suppressed Walther P22.

I found it is much more practical (not to mention cheaper) to have as few platforms as possible that use the same ammunition and magazines than to be that crazy guy with all the guns like Bert from Tremors.

I’d like to get a .22 rifle, but thats about it. I haven’t bought a new gun since March or so.

See I did it again.

I did personally trim my collection down to just Glocks, ARs (still have one AK) and Benelli shotguns so I have the same ammo/manual of arms.

But I am always thinking stuff like:

-I am looking into getting a new hunting rifle and every time I look a a AR-10 type rifle I think “This AR is heavy, a basic bolt action wouldn’t be so damn heavy to carry to the next stand.”

-Darn, I need to change the batteries in my Aimpoint, crap, now I have to go and sign away my soul to get some lithium batteries.

-Crap, I can’t wear those pants, My G19 will print.

-I need to keep this rifle low profile so people don’t panic at some guy in camo walking down the road with an assault rifle.

-Why don’t they make gun boots for ATV’s that fit ARs

I’ll get over it.

I am sure it is a virus.

Probably a zombie virus and I will be the 1st one to go and I won’t even get to use my cool guns…:mad:

I’ve went from armory size down to prepared size, but not getting rid of all the ar pattern rifles.

I’ve never thought about selling all my “non-fudd” guns, but I have considered going back to my shooting roots, and focus more on my shotgun skills (trap, skeet) and .22 plinking skills.

I still have more Fudd guns than tactical guns, but I focus nearly all my attention on the latter, unless it’s a hunting season. Sometimes I feel as if I leave the other guns out and don’t include them enough. I’ve got several shotguns and rifles that I probably havnt fired in 3 or 4 years.

I’ve done a lot of consolidation, but to the other side. I’ve dropped down to two pistol calibers (9mm and .45ACP) and two platforms (Glock & 1911). On the rifle side, it’s all black rifles (one suppressed 11.5" RR M16, a 14.5"AR, an 18"AR and one 6.8 AR in build status for hunting). One shotgun is the 18" 590A1 with screw in chokes. I have a suppressed 10/22, a suppressed Savage MK II, a suppressed Browning Buckmark, a suppressed 21A and a suppressed .22LR AR upper. The only reason I keep all the .22 platforms is because they’re fairly inexpensive and cheap/fun/quiet to shoot.

Almost forgot, I have a Marlin SBL Guide Gun in 45-70 with an Aimpoint R1, just for giggles.

If I were to add one FUDD gun, it’s probably be a Remington Model 7 in .308 or 7mm-08. they’re super light and good hunting guns.

If I were the OP, I’d keep those black guns and get a new FUDD gun every once in a while, just to keep you entertained! :slight_smile:

I am taking the blue pill as a long-term treatment, not a one-time dose.

Several years ago I stopped collecting. I mean stopped…cold.

I had guns that I bought strictly for looks (like beautiful laminated Russian SKS’s in near-mint condition). I also thought I had to have one of every assault rifle made. I got down to the Steyr AUG, saw the price, choked, and awoke from my obsession.

Finally I asked myself if I was trying to start my own firearms museum. I sold off anything that I didn’t think was good enough to use for HD.

Right now I live on a ranch, and as I near retirement age I plan to sell it and hopefully live off the proceeds. By then I’ll probably live in town and keep one or two handguns and one or two AR’s, if that.

I’d never willingly get down to zero, but at some point the accumulation no longer makes sense.

I have sold a few though. Early on I decided that I wanted all my guns to be functional in an every day way. That does not mean that they all have to be simpleton guns, but they needed to be functional for HD, hunting, or whatever. Not necessarily ideal. So, a bolt action mil-surp passes because it is functional. Not ideal for anything in modern times, but can be used to hunt, SHTF, etc.

In early 94 I sold a MAK-90 type gun [actual number was something else like NMH-91 or something but it was typical early 90s thumbhole AK] in 223. I’d only had it about 5 months but had bought my first AR receiver and decided I did not need it and wanted the funds to build the AR. This was before my “functional gun” decision.

I later bought an Eagle Arms AR that had a 24" super heavy barrel and free float tube. I put a scope on it and enjoyed shooting it. It was like shooting a heavy barrel 10/22 and scope – you can watch your hits through the scope – but you were shooting 223 instead. It did not move when fired. However, after having this a while, I came to my “functional gun” decision and decided this was too heavy to be one, and I sold it. Except for some cast AR receivers I bought in 2004 when I was cash poor but wanted to get something in hand under the belief that the AWB would be reinstated, and that I later sold after BHO’s election in 2008, I don’t think I have sold any more guns.

That does not mean that all my guns get regular use. Most don’t. But I still like having them. Some still have their cosmoline or cosmoline equivalent on them after 12 years of sitting in their boxes (think Ishapore Enfield 2A) but some day I will get around to cleaning them up, having them inspected, and shooting them or making something out of them. Same for the old pitted VZ24s I bought for their actions back in the 90s…

If I had the resources, I would agree with SteyrAUG and his “reference collection” ideas for myself. But I don’t. But it appeals to me.

Now, the ones I do deal with on a more regular basis are my functional ARs and my M&P handguns. My first go-to guns if I were to need to defend myself and my family. I don’t do much plinking any more (though I hope to change that as I get my son involved in shooting, and eventually the daughter [he is 9, she is 4]). Any time I spend shooting is to (at least on paper) develop or reinforce certain skills and training.

But the other guns are nice to have, where ever they may be :wink:

My observations of this have led me to believe that it’s normal, especially for one who discovered this stuff fairly recently, to get ‘mental fatigue’ and want to go back to the way things were before they took the red pill.

Seen it a few times. You may get overwhelmed and weary of it all, but you’ll be back. You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave.
