During a 3-year period, 1966-69. We lost 81 KIA. Many firefights. Ended up with the CIB being awarded for American troops north of the Imjin River, as well as combat pay. Of course this was during the height of the Vietnam War so no doubt was overshadowed by the events in SE Asia. I had recalled hearing that the Army awarded the CIB in limited amounts outside of Vietnam; well, this was where.
I find military history tidbits like this very interesting. Little things like the U.S. forces in Korea during this period were armed with M14’s, not M16’s. The M16’s were being sent to Vietnam as fast as they could make them, so that left Europe, CONUS, Panama, and South Korea that were issued M14’s. IIRC both the M16 and the M14 were simultaneously considered as “Service A” for a short period (?).
EDIT: this was well before “Operation Paul Bunyon”, the fatal tree-trimming incident in 1976.
