ESSTAC KYWIs in rigs other than ESSTAC?

Gents. Did a search for this, but couldn’t find anything to help me.

I have a 7.62 Mayflower QD Chest Rig that I can’t get along with due to the bungee retention. I’d hate to ditch the rig due to that and I’m looking at options.

Question: Do KYWIs work in rigs other than ESSTACs’ and in particular, does anyone know if they work with the Mayflower QD style chest rigs?

Thanks in advance.

macnamara,

Currently the KYWI only works with ESSTAC products, although we are in development on several PIG products that will be utilizing the KYWI under license. Thanks for asking!

Having run both KYWIs and Double KYWIs for a couple months now, I would not recommend sewing loop material into the pouch to secure the KYWI. In fact, I would highly recommend molding your own Kydex if you were trying to make an insert for a pouch. The KYWIs are fantastic and under most other circumstances they are the way to go. But since you dont have a pouch made for them and since, I’ve found with a batch of 6 KYWIs and 4 doubles, the hook material on the KYWI can become loose and slightly release the KYWI, I would recommend molding your own 7.62 size inserts.

Kydex can be sourced from KnifeKits.com. I recommend 0.093" Kydex in the color of your choice for durability. A single 12"x12" sheet should yield at least 3 inserts. It is extremely easy to mold and for purposes such as this, foam and a molding press should not even be necessary. To secure it in the pouch, I suggest simply drill through the base of the insert and burn through the bottom of your pouches with a cheap soldering iron that you dont care about, (radio shack carries them for a few bucks. Burning the holes will prevent fraying). A single 3/16" stainless bolt or larger from Home Depot will do the job nicely so long as you give it a nice, big locking washer. Cut the excess bolt with a cutoff wheel and finish it if you wish with Birchwood Casey Super Blue. Viola.

Up to you how fancy you want to get with the inserts’ friction retention. The KYWIs really just have a bend that features its apex just above where a mag’s bump is, beneath its mag catch indentation. And they work very well. So you dont have to mold in a bump to fit into the indentation or anything. But you can. Up to you.

Pax, just the info I was after, excellent. Funnily enough, I stumbled upon your blog in my research prior to posting this thread. Looks like it’s off to Knifekits. Cheers!
