Those who can afford competent criminal defense attorneys and keep their mouth shut will get convicted far less often in jury trials than mere peons who have a public defender.
Add a long time span, the death of the main defendant, the death of at least one victim, an uncooperative co-defendant who is also unreliable and will not hold up to cross examination and prosecution of further co-conspirators becomes way more difficult. Oh and by the way every single one of the suspected co-conspirators is insanely wealthy, easily able to afford the finest criminal defense attorneys money can buy. They’ve also had time to destroy, tamper with, and otherwise get rid of a lot of evidence.
Their defense attorneys will eviscerate an already shaky prosecution effort. Prosecutors are notoriously ambitious critters who care way more about their reputation and next big thing, to pet that burning dog. Lose one of those and have a high profile defendant (who is probably guilty) walk out of court a free man with every commentator, podcaster, and reporter opining on what a dumb dumb they are, they can kiss their dreams of becoming x,y,z head mo-fo in charge goodbye.
