I know, I know about the prior Eotech issues. And yes, I have used the search function but can’t find too many reviews on the 517 model.
I need a RDS for a secondary carbine and want to try a reflex sight of some sort. I am tempted by the Eotech rebates and am thinking about the 517 or XPS 2. I’m liking the 517 based solely on price and it has a built-in riser, even though I like the transverse battery in the XPS.
I guess my question is do you knowledgeable folks feel comfortable with Eotech’s current models to spend your hard earned money on them?
I have been running 2 of the new 557 and have not had any problems. From what I have found as long as its a rev F you are fine (newer ones). They made some changes in the rev F and it has solved their problems. You will get a lot about battery life but to be honest I think that’s not that great of a negative. People love the S&B Short Dot but look at the battery run time of it…the Aimpoint guys don’t seem to say anything about that, I guess because its so expensive. Buy what you like and have at it, they are all gtg.
My decision came down to a Trijicon Tri-power, EOTech 552, and an Aimpoint T1. I chose the EOTech and have been happy with my choice.
I have run a 552 on two of my rifles, and as far as issues with EOTechs go, mine has worked flawlessly. ( my rifles & optics take a good beating on hunts too)
I have been on the same AA batteries since Sept, and been in -15f while hunting and it has yet to have a problem. As much of a beating as the EOTech has taken, I have had no shifting with the zero either. I like the reticle pattern, some have issues with it. Use whats comfortable and will get you on target fast. I’m sure you will like your 557.
I would probably give the XPS a shot over any of the older models due to the new battery design and smaller size.
…
All 557 sights are “Revision F” because the sights were introduced after the Revision F upgrade to the 552, 551, 512, and 511.
Not going to get into details, but the Short Dot other 1-4x scopes are in a completely different league from red dot and holographic sights. They are a compromise optic that works for some people, but they should not be compared to Aimpoints and EOTechs as a 1X only solution.
I have a 553 with the built in riser and throw levers. I have never changed the batteries (got it 6/2008). The sight has never failed and always returns to zero when I take it off to clean it and the rifle. I am switching to the T-1 for weight reasons and I will use the Eotech on my back up carbine. I would go with the XPS but it does not offer quick release or a riser yet.
I’ve used the 517 and prefer it to the 512/552. The side buttons are easier to access & don’t interfere w/close mounted rear BUIS and the mount’s crossbolt is stronger & better-designed.
