Does anyone know anything about these Elcan red dot scopes? Can find too much info which usually means something bad.
i know the canucks like 'em… i haven’t heard too much else about them, except that they’re heavy and not as reliable as aimpoints.
there’s been mention of them in a couple threads here on M4C, though.
Looks like it’s comparable to a Aimpoint CompM4 in capabilities, all be it 2oz heavier.
Considering what an Aimpoint micro costs, I’d get it over the Elcan RD or the CompM4.
Some detailed impressions of the Specter RD below.
My thing is this. I want a T1 or an H1. I have a Comp M2 and I doubt that it is going to sell or that someone will trade. I can get one of these for around 375.00. So I am kicking it around in my head.
I seem to remember a thread on this forum about the Elcan, but my search-fu isn’t working. It must have been 4-5 months ago and the impressions were favorable, but no one had tortured one yet.
I’m interested in buying one of these as well. Are they discontinued? I can’t seem to find them on their website.
They seem like they would be a solid piece. I have handled the DR’s in person and they are built to take a beating. So if these are built in a similar fashion I don’t think you can go wrong. 6 years of constant on is awesome as well! The AP M4 is 10 years or so with lithium batteries but also cost 3-4 hundred more depending on where you buy it and mount set up. I feel this would be a great alternative to an AP or Eotech.
I have convinced my firend to buy one for his rifle when he gets some money. When he does, I will let everyone know what it is like…
Also, they are pretty hard to find? Only place that is selling them is botach. Anyone know of another place to find them?
Hey armakraut,
Thanks for linking to my mini-review. Since then, my friend has about 2500 rounds through his AR with no problems at all with the Specter RD or its mount.
for the money, $ 405.00 after discount, I don’t know any other serious RDS that gives you NV compatibility, water proof, shock resistant, AA battery (6 year constant on), and it includes the mount.
As to the extra 2 oz: if you take off the 2 rubber baby buggy bumpers that look like rails the weight is the same.
I was at the AUSA conference quite a few years back.
Saw the Elcan DR 1x-4x.
It was very cool and I was impressed at the ability to go from 1-4x at the flip of a lever.
But it was a HEAVY bitch compared to other sights.
I tested one out at scottsdale gun club and I was not that impressed. the magnification was cool just like having a flip magnifier on the back of a red dot without the flip. I will second that it is really heavy and for the money I would go EoTECH or Aimpoint all the way
