Hey guys just out curiosity is anyone here…ran or currently running a EGW HD 45ACP extractor? If so could you give some insight on your experience.
Can’t comment on the EGW, but im really starting to like the Wilson Combat Bulletproof Extractor.
A bit wider hook and the radius are pretty much done for you.
I take some #400 grit sandpaper wrap it around a jewelers file and polish the inside of the hook and radius. Then tension and install.
The back end seems to either line up with the slide or can be fitted with a a bit of sandpaper.
A big step up from the factory extractors.
I’m using one in the 1911 I built for myself.
No issues to report. About 700 rounds on the gun.
I believe that Hilton Yam recommends them.
I’m running one in my Springfield fit by Steve Morrison. Very consistent extraction at 1600 every time with or without a magazine.
Creeping up on 3k with mine, no malfunctions. Definitely worth the purchase. Have two fitted just to save some time in the future.
It is a great part but keep in mind that you will have to fit everything on it. The end sticks out way past the slide, the slot for the firing pin stop will have to be fit in most cases and there is no bevel on the hook.
It is oversized everywhere which is truly awesome if you are doing a new build but if you want to buy one that only needs to be tensioned and maybe have the hook polished, you will be well served by the Wilson extractor.
Both of these parts are excellent. You can’t go wrong with either, really.
I have about 5k on one of these extractors, that is in a full rebuild of a Colt Series 70 reissue I did. At first, the brass all went in a little pile at 4 O’clock. It has since opened up a bit, but not much.
I have only had 5 stoppages with the pistol, all three point “jams”, which were solved by the tap of the T-R-E. All of these stoppages were with Fiocchi ball ammo, which coincidentally caused the same stoppages in several of our work fleet of S&W MP45’s, so I don’t know if I can count those against the 1911.
The do need to be completely fitted and tuned. EGW makes good stuff.
I had to put a Wilson BP extractor , and firing pin stop on my kimber ultra carry right off the bat after putting 600 rounds through it, brass was still clocking, and hitting me in the head.
Once I did this, it has been flawless.
Like has been said earlier, they’re better if you’re doing a complete rebuild, or if you’re building a gun from the frame/slide up. That’s what most of EGW’s parts are geared toward. I was rebuilding my pistol, which is why I used it.
Wilson’s is closer to a drop in. A little fitting required, and it’ll need to be tensioned, but if you’re just flipping extractors, I’d actually recommend that one instead.
