“Edward Snowden has - in a heroic effort at great personal cost - revealed the existence and extent of the surveillance, the U.S. government devotes electronic communications worldwide. By putting light on this monitoring program - conducted in contravention of national laws and international agreements - Edward Snowden has helped to make the world a little bit better and safer,” Svallfors wrote.
Referencing the Nuremberg trials of Nazis, Svallfors says following orders is not an excuse for acting against human rights and freedom, and he praised Snowden’s courage in leaking the information.
Svallfors also noted that Obama was a past recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, which he called a correctable mistake.
Errr…remember Ed, the guy who before the “race war inciting of the cretin & chief, and his AG,” was dominating the news? BTW, convenient wasn’t it, how the “race war inciting” happened to “ahh” smother him out of it, don’t you think?
Certainly the Nobel Peace Prize is a joke (I would disagree about the actual Nobel Prize given for scientific acomplishment).
ETA: As far as Snowden himself, I’ll defer to Rep. Ron Paul’s words:
My understanding is that espionage means giving secret or classified information to the enemy. Since Snowden shared information with the American people, his indictment for espionage could reveal (or confirm) that the US Government views you and me as the enemy. -Ron Paul
I agree with the sentiment. However, if he crossed the line and gave info on how we gather intel on foreign countries to those foreign countries then it pretty much is espionage.
And yes, the whole peace prize is stupid.
As of now I still have some semblance of respect for the prizes in science. Although of they keep associating themselves with idiots those prized will tarnish as well.
“A Swedish sociology professor has nominated Edward Snowden for the Nobel Peace Prize, saying that awarding the former NSA employee would correct Nobel Committee’s mistake in giving the award to President Barack Obama in 2009.”
I hope they learn from that mistake and never, ever give anyone a Nobel Prize for something they have not yet achieved and likely never will.
#1, it is not even nomination season, making this nothing more than a symbolic act; #2, anyone can nominate anyone they like. Just because a name is sent doesn’t mean the name will make it past the basic selection criteria to move on for consideration. A whole article and a bunch of brew-ha about absolutely nothing.
I hadn’t seen that Ron Paul quote. If he said that then bravo to him.
It has been a joke for a long time. The real question is if you were nominated for it would you be insulted at this point? I’ve have to reflect on my life personally knowing who has received it before me.
Yep. When his wife begged him to stop this work, he said “dead is dead”. I.E. this is war, what difference does it make how a soldier dies. Very strange that he would be awarded the Nobel prize for this. Sadly, according to the book “In The Garden of Beasts”, after Haber fled Germany due to Nazi oppression of Jews, the Nazis used another of his inventions against his (and my) own people. Zyklon A gas was turned into the more potent Zyklon B gas. And the rest, is…
Which is why I can only imagine Snowden winning the Nobel Peace Prize would be a rather huge embarrassment for Obama. Not to mention that one Peace Prize winner attempting to pursue, persecute, and prosecute another would only continue to undermine Obama’s standing and credibility in the world.
