That’s awesome. Not so much the linking of rounds which just sounds like tedious work, but the notion of having a heavy machine gun mounted in my living room facing the world through a window is very cool.
Hathcock generally used the standard sniper rifle: the Winchester Model 70 .30-06 caliber rifle with the standard 8-power Unertl scope. On some occasions, however, he used a different weapon: the .50-caliber M2 Browning Machine Gun, on which he mounted the Unertl scope, using a bracket of his own design.[9] This weapon had a Traversing and Elevating (T& E) mount that enabled precise aiming: it was accurate to 2500 yards when fired one round at a time. At one point, he took careful aim at a courier carrying a load of assault rifles and ammunition on a bicycle. He had second thoughts when he saw a 12-year-old boy in his sights, but after considering the intended use of those weapons, he decided to disable the bicycle, hitting the bike frame. The boy tumbled over the handlebars, grabbed a gun, and immediately began firing back, so Hathcock returned fire, killing him.
I had way too much fun doing my Mythbusters thread on Hathcock’s “shot through a scope” kill, and at least in my eyes absolutely proved the validity of this amazing sniper kill and story.
While his long running record for longest sniper kill that only recently was broken has never been disputed, I’m not sure it has every been recreated and simulated. Damn what an awesome thing to do…perhaps I think I have an idea if you will let me come down to your neck of the words;) I do believe you have told me that you only have a 1000yds to play with…Everglades??:D:cool:
It has been broken several times over. Corporal’s Craig Harrison, Rob Furlong, Arron Perry as well as Sgt Brian Kremer have all surpassed Hathcock from the year 2002 on.
That’s pretty freaking cool bro! Even after 7 years in the military, I’ve only had the opportunity to shoot the ma-deuce once! (Lame MOS I guess) Who’s Danger-Ranger is that?
I like to point out that Carlos did this with a standard MG…not a super duper accuratized propose build 50 cal sniper rifle. He is my all time favorite hero too.
I wonder if the kill total has been broken or if it’s just the documented kill total because the documentation has gotten easier with better technology and a battlefield environment where they don’t drag off the dead?
great accomplishments all the way around, by tremendous soldiers. I just wonder. Kinda like sports records that are broken now that seasons are longer is it really a fair comparison?
