You seem to place a greater emphasis on training to be able to deploy edged weapons in a tactical situation. My question is in regard to blade selection for edc. What do qualities do you look for when selecting a knife for carry? Fixed v folder? Straight v tanto? Blade length etc.? Any particular brands/models you endorse? Thanks!
what do you think of the Strider fixed blades? specifically the DB? I know you mentioned drop point, but this knife does seem popular among some in the training community.
I have a couple of questions regarding your philosophy on edged weapon selection/deployment. For the sake of not crowding the forum with overlapping threads I figured I would just piggy back on this one.
In the context of an assaulter in full kit (i.e. heavy armor, carbine etc) what general size and configuration of blade do you recommend?
Where do you position the blade (i.e. support or weapon side, behind pouches, panels etc)?
Do you have any preferred techniques or tactics that are supported by the blade selection/placement?
What application do you see the blade filling in the CQB environment? Aside from obvious use of force consideration do you envision that application being markedly different for Military vs. LEOs?
I know this is a pretty tall order and your a busy guy. Any insight you could offer would be appreciated.
The other questions are best left for a class because of some particulars that the Internet can’t provide- sorry, but want to make sure the info is going go the right peeps.
Kyle,
I’m looking into the Bloodshark from Dan and had a question. What is your preferred method of sharpening that knife, or any knife for that matter. I currently use a cheap SOG Flash II folder and a dual sided stone. My current method is wet the stone with honing oil, low angle, push away from body as you drag the knife towards the tip. I’ve seen a few videos depicting this but I cannot seem to get the “shaving sharp” edge that people seek.
The stone I have is dual sided aluminum oxide sharpening stone is a 2 sided stone with one coarse grit and one fine grit side. Measures 6" x 2" x 1". I also use Lansky honing oil.
