EDC Fire Starter . . .

I keep this one in my pack. It stores the tender and works really well. lightweight but big enough to get a grip on. Also keep one in my glove box. I smoke so always have a half a dozen bics around. Like knives you can never have too many fire starting methods around. Also keep some of those magnifying glass cards in my wallet, truck and pack. Trying to pick one of the percussion type firestarters but can’s decide which one.

I carry a Scripto brand disposable lighter in a Soto Pocket Torch along with a Light My Fire Swedish FireSteel 2.0 Army.

I carry a bic disposable lighter; 6’ of duct tape wrapped around it, fishing line, hooks, and some weight(flat)under the duct tape. I carry a second mini bic in a chest pocket, cotton balls soaked in vaseline, a ferro rod on my keyring, another on the survival key fob on my keyring, I also have another fero rod and 3 more lighters in my edc pack.
I also have waterproof matches in a brass capsule;http://www.countycomm.com/brasscompass.html, and this brass flint wheel sparkler, http://www.countycomm.com/brassflint.html.

Overboard? I do not think so. Think layers, and in different places on your body; more than one ignition source, and more than one kindling source. By far the most used in the last 28 years has been the bic lighter in all conditions.

I have one of those soto pocket torches. It works really well. One has to remember to buy scripto lighters though. I’ve run into a time or two when the bic’s just aren’t hot enough (or you can’t hold it long enough)

I also have extra bics, and magnesium/flint sticks in different bags. I am a big believer in the latter.

Have used it several times to practice and found it was very easy to use and dependable. Both of mine are red and very easy to see when or if dropped. Check out the videos on Youtube and see how easy and well it really works

I’m thinking about looking into attaching these to various jackets and other gear I use everyday. Simple, effective and very low profile. You could also make simple keychains out of them.

Ferro rods are fun, and using one teaches one a lot about fire building. I think they’re great for survival kits that ride around in trunks of cars or in boats, but here’s an excerpt from a post I made in this subject in another forum:

Why do so many people carry ferro rods?

If I’m going to carry something with me every day it has to either serve multiple functions (Swiss Army Knife, safety pins, paracord) or perform a single, essential function better than anything else (flashlight, firearm).

A ferro rod does exactly one thing, and it doesn’t perform that function particularly well. I’ve started many fires under a variety of conditions. 99% of the time the tool I used was a disposable Bic lighter, and it has always done the job. Once or twice (particularly in windy conditions) I might have wished I could swap it for a Zippo, but not once in my 50+ years of life have I said, “If I only had a ferrocerium rod…”

I can see where such a thing would be nice to put in a survival kit that might sit unused for several years (in a boat or airplane, or in a zombie apocalypse bugout cabin)…but for everyday carry? I don’t get it. I understand the need for a backup to critical items, which is why I keep additional Bic lighters in my vehicles, desk drawer, etc. I don’t see the need for a second, different fire making device.

Big +1 on this. If you look at the cost of different fire starters, you will light more fires with Bic’s than pretty much anything else for the same money. Bic’s are easier to use, especially one-handed, than most others.
