I got a friend who did some work for a guy and the guy wants to give him this rifle for partial payment. From the research I did, it looks like it is a 1990-1992-ish model, but it also appears as if it has had some mods done. I have no idea of how many rounds are down the pipe. Anybody have any idea how much this would be worth?
I have no idea, but that upper looks nothing like my early 90’s H Bar competion sporter upper. The barrel looks fluted, and it has a bayonet lug, plus the barrel and handguards looks shorter than the competion model, which had 20" barrels.
Agreed. This looks nothing like the Colt Sporter HBAR. It appears that someone got ahold of a Sporter HBAR lower and mated it to a carbine upper. The Sporter HBAR was a full size rifle with an A2 stock and fixed carry handle. What you have there is a frankengun.

the upper is original(markings are Colt Alcoa Forge). guess they just replaced the barrel.
If it is 90-92 production that would make it pre-ban and worth something in states like NY that still have the ban. Being that it probably has a sear block, the lower is worth around $500. Together, not knowing barrel manufacturer, maybe $750-$900. Again, this would be if he sold it online where it got some hits from people in ban states.

Not drilled for a Sear, but a Sear-Block. They drilled that hole partially overlapping on the location that you would need to drill the hole for the sear-pin. This makes it impossible to actually drill the Sear-hole.
The lower is probably worth around $500-600 to somebody in a ban-state (like Me here in New York), that upper is one ugly-mule, though. I don’t know ANYBODY who would want that thing.
Whats that little thinger in the trigger-guard? is that one of those hell-storm bump-firing devices?
The serial number looks correct for “pre-ban”. My Sporter Competition HBAR is #0023xx and was purchased in 1993.
My '91 vintage Match HBAR carries a MH 019xxx S/N. The lower is “large-pin” with sear block and no bridge around the mag release.

I bought a Blue label R6601 20" HBAR pre ban back in 2002 and have never shot the damn’ thing. It has no bayo lug and has fixed carry handle on upper. It has a slight greenish tinted finish on it. It too has the plastic sear block in the receiver.
I actually got ripped on the rifle. I bought it for $1750 big ones. That was before the sunset of the ban though. Oh well. It is still NIB. I am still glad I got it and will never part with it.

In NY state a original Colt Carbine will go for around $1800. A full size 20" Colt will go for $1500. I picked up an original Colt model 6520 carbine(out of state) for $1050 and a brand new in the box model 6601(out of state dealer) for $1300. I would shoot for $1200. The original complete upper for that lower is a extra heavy barrel with flat top upper. The barrel is a 1-9 twist.
