Dry Fire aids

Title pretty much sums it up.

Apps or other modern twist to improve a persons pistol shooting what is good, and what is not good.

The Mantis device, like a hundred bucks. Works wonders.

Waaaay back in the day, drill sergeants used a dime. It worked like a hundred bucks or more and only cost a dime.

Talking about the front sight balance or something else?

That’s what I was referring to. Balancing a dime on the barrel just forward of the front sight. Drill sergeants had us all doing that in the prone unsupported position endlessly in gravel while screaming at us that American soldiers always performed best in the most uncomfortable conditions. It sucked.

I should try the mantis. I have one of the laserlyte targets that seems to work pretty good. No complaints.

I like the laser ammo brand. Recoil enabled using air soft guns.

Good memories, Lobo! Good times.

I’ve been incorporating a shot timer, and following very specific routines. For example, Ben Stoeger’s method is simple=at the beep, press QUICK! If that dot moves, work on eliminating that. After a while, it helps alot.

JCN on PF came up with a drill called SWYNTS, it’s actually quite helpful.

Link to the thread where we’re participating, he explains it:

It IS a live fire drill, but the concept was that we do it, then do it regularly as a dryfire drill, using the par times, for a week or so, then get back out and do it live.

All of us participating showed improvement.

Using the timer with dryfire is a good evolution for me.

ETA: damn these infernal devices, I can’t make the link hot! HA!

My buddy has a system for ARs. It replaced the BCG and the magazine is the battery. When you pull the yrigger a laser is shot out the barrel and the BCG mechanism resets the hammer. It’s pretty awesome. I’m try and find out what the system is.

I guess it’s another Mantis system.

I still use the dime. When teaching a handgun class, I make sure I have a roll of dimes on hand.

I’ve had the greatest improvements with using a standard snap caps.

My wife bought me this laser shooting setup that can hook up to an iPhone or iPad. It was pretty much meh for me.

For me its my exact EDC setup (gun with optic, holster, belt, and concealment) plus a timer and B8 target. Everything else has been internal. Meaning understanding where and what to place my conscious mind on within the process of drawing, aiming/presentation, and pulling the trigger.

Most of what needs improvement is establishing a natural point of aim that lands exactly where you want it to 95% of the time at the speed of life. Thats in your grip, grip tension, maintaining the same eye-target line, and getting rid of shoulder tension.

Then it’s on to putting your concious mind into the trigger finger so thats is all that moves when you pull the trigger straight to the rear.

Same here. Target something small like an electrical outlet on the other side of the room and watch your front sight and try not to move it when you break the trigger. Do that a few dozen times a day for years and suddenly you have something. You don’t need to actually buy anything.

You want to really make serious improvement, get a DA auto or revolver and maintain your sight picture on the same kind of target before, during and after the trigger pull. When ammo is expensive, I do dry fire drill. I’ve seen people who can’t even hold a handgun steady on target who blow through hundreds of rounds with no real improvement because they can’t even do a stable presentation. But I’ve also seen people make dramatic improvement with a single box of 50 rounds by trying to maintain a sight picture before, during and after rounds fired with a 5 second pause between rounds.

It really is all about having foundation skills or not having foundation skills.

Well for that matter I’ve found that doing dryfire as I now do with a pistol MRDS is a huge help. It…does NOT lie, if you know what I mean.

I’m sure Yoni already knows this though.

What’s even funnier, is dry fire is probably the only thing a projected (constant on) visible laser is good for. Snap one you your handgun, hold the dot steady on target and just TRY and keep it there through the entire trigger break. I’ve seen people move it to the second wall.

I dry fire by turning the dot down to the smallest point that I can and then pick the smallest target possible.

This thread is for a friend that has issues with the learning curve of pistol shooting.

I am hoping the mantixs can help him along.

I have some slight vision issues in my rights eye from radiation (cancer treatment). I was shooting some IDPA matches and was just not shooting well; I think it was the change of vision. I bought the Mantisx system which really worked well for me.

I want this!!
