Drug of choice?

Caffeine vs Alcohol. I made my decision out of the necessity to off set the constant sleep deprivation that I have chosen to accept. It is really amazing how addicted I am to coffee. My body craves it. Headaches, mood enhancement, bowel activity, thinking power. I can’t think of any benefit from alcohol. I still miss the taste of a good beer and the smooth feel of bourbon. But, I have adopted coffee across the board as my all day beverage. My kitchen has 3 coffee devices right now readily available to dispense my elixir of life. Don’t ask me to quit, don’t get between me and my mug, just let my mind and body buzz. Yes, I am an addict. No, I am not a quitter.

I remember sitting out on the patio with a Black Coffee and a Marlboro Ciggerette every morning before PT.
Very relaxing at a point in my life where I didn’t relax much.

The Best Part of Wakng up is running for the bathroom after finishing my Coffee and putting my smoke out.
In the final moments of my first marriage I would take a dump in the Master and leave the door open for her to enjoy it too!

If I could only choose 1, caffine.

It actually has benefits.

Anyone who was ever in the Navy pretty much has to answer Coffee.

I am not trying to put my drug of choice on a pedestal, but yes. Caffeine does have many health benefits. Probably in moderation though. I represent excessive consumption. What is the the analogy to an Alcoholic?

I enjoy both, but not every day. A cup of coffee (caffeine) gives me a great feeling similar to amphetamines, but if I drink coffee regularly it doesn’t. The rush from rising alcohol in the bloodstream after a couple drinks is very enjoyable. Chasing that rush with more drinks is a fail, just get drunk. Daily use of either… no thanks. Prefer to enjoy caffeine and alcohol rather than needlessly enslave myself for no joy.

I too enjoy both, but I would chose coffee well over alcohol. I stopped drinking during the week days and I noticed my overall mood and my recovery from workouts was just better, I still have a drink in social settings and like to have a drink at the end of the day on weekends watch Baseball or Football but coffee for me is just an everyday thing. I was stuck driving in a cold rainy day last week to a customer site and a 30oz Yeti of Red Rock Black Magic and some CCR and I was in heaven.

Coffee everyday sometimes twice a day…take a cup before the gym helps avoid a preworkout.

Beer maybe once a week or every two weeks and I love my porters or stouts

Coffee, makes you poop; alcohol makes you puke…

I like my coffee and will drink it as long as I can.
I gave up beer a number of years ago, so far coffee hasn’t had any detrimental affects.

I may be getting immune to coffee’s affects, mornings when I wake up too early (0300) I can have a cup or two and go back to sleep for a couple of hours.

I’ve also recently learned that if coffee has that affect you may have ADHD
That wouldn’t surprise me.

I’ve been in the process of weaning myself off of coffee, drinking a cup of mud/wtr when I wake up and then I’ll have just one cup of coffee later in the day if I start to fade, much better than the pot of coffee a day I was drinking. I also add a scoop of Laird Superfood’s performance mushrooms to the mud/wtr.

Alcohol wise, I’ll have a single drink maybe once or twice a week although I do go weeks at a time without a drink.

When I do coffee, it’s espresso so a little time consuming.

Coke is my caffeine fix.

I have a breville in my office. I have either an espresso or redeye every morning. Its great, and keeps me from energy drink which I was doing daily before.

Quit drinking Sept 1. So my morning coffee is it. Water only the rest of the time.

Thread title put an Alice In Chains song in my head.

I may not have been a Devil Dog, but Rule 23 applies just as much.

Gibbs Rule #23: NEVER mess with a Marine’s coffee… if you want to live.

Anger works pretty good also !
You will see more and more of it as America devolves !

We used to have Coffee brewing every morning in the field.
I think if you wanted to take us out, you could have just followed the smell of Coffee in to our AA.
You had to cut that stuff with GI Milk otherwise it would knock your dick stiff for 12 hours.

As I type this, I’m sipping coffee with bourbon in it. Delightful on this beautiful fall day.

I have a breville and enjoy espresso, however I prefer my French press and how much control I have with it to get the flavor profile exactly to my liking.

I also roast and age my own beans to have greater control over end flavor.

I start with a mixture of Ethiopian and Kona beans. I roast myself, I roast 1/2 of the beans lightly and then the other half medium. I take a few handfuls and roast them heavy and hot for a short period of time.

I store them in an American white oak barrel that I charred myself and do the equivalent of a #6 char (200-225 minutes) to add some tannin and woody/vanilla acidic flavor to my beans.

I do a 3 part grind to expose different areas of the bean to express different flavors, 1/3 coarse, 1/3 medium and 1/3 fine grind. Then I do a 10 minute cold extraction at 38 degree F, followed by a 5-7 minute hot extraction at 173.5 degree F.

So, yeah, I like coffee. I enjoy it very much and won’t give it up except for a short period here and there.

I also make the bourbon myself at a distillery I have a stake in. I make a specific bourbon just for my coffee.

Without getting into too much detail, the grain bill is 25% corn, 50% 2-row, 5% rye, 10% white wheat and 10% millet.

I age it between 2-4 years in char #3 French oak barrels and then another 2 years in olorosso sherry casks with toasted tops.

I’m glad I’m not forced to choose between either, however if the choice was necessary, I’d stick with coffee.

Coffee. Period. I’m a total snob now. My wife has converted me.

I hardly touched the coffee when I was younger, but as I grow older I like it more every day. The opposite with alcohol. Now that I’m pushing 60, it’s almost like I’m developing an intolerance to alcohol. Just one glass of wine or one beer will make me sleep like crap and I will feel terrible the entire next day. It’s not even worth it anymore. I might have one drink a month now.

Plug for Will Brink’s Alphajoe Coffee here. It’s literally the only thing I put in my coffee. If I can’t use that, I just drink the stuff black. I love going overseas and drinking their coffee. It’s the real stuff. Trust me guys, try some of the Alphajoe stuff. It’s worth it. The flavor and health benefits are awesome.
