I’ve been in the hunt for a new drop leg holster. I currently have an LBT universal one. I do not like it for 2 reasons: 1) The primary retention method kind of sucks in my opinion. It has a button that snaps closed to hold the gun in place. I have had it come unsnapped and drop my pistol before. 2) The secondary retention is a strap that wraps around the pistol grip and attaches with a buckle. I never have liked this that is why I used to run the holster without this strap, but since I had the issue I described previously I now use this strap. There is nothing fast about drawing from the holster with this secondary strap in place. I normally have to take my eye off the target and look at it to find the buckle.
I have to use a universal holster because my pistol is pretty hard to find fitted holsters for (EAA/Tanfoglio Witness). I have asked about holsters before on some gun forum and I was told to get a different gun. That does not appeal to me. Without getting too much into it, I really like the Witness.
Does anybody know of any company that makes a drop leg holster I should look at?
Correct me if Im wrong, but the Safariland 6004 is molded for specific pistols and they dont have one for the witness? That is why i think i need a universal holster.
It might work with a cz one, but i think the cz the Tanfoglio is based on does not have a rail so they dont work. I like drop legs because they allow me to use the belt on my backpack with the holster on.
I’ve heard good things about g-code holsters, but I just looked through all their product line and they look like they are all fitted to specific models (of course not mine) as well.
I guess what I was hoping exists is something that is a universal holster like my LBT that has a better retention system. The safariland with that look over the top would work well if only they offered it in a universal body.
I’m not opposed to a custom kydex one, but I have not seen anybody that does drop leg custom kydex. Honestly I do not know the custom kydex makers though.
You’d have to be creative with mounting but could accomplish it by covering the holster body with Velcro and doing the same with the inside of the shroud (HSGI would likely of this for you if you asked). The shroud wraps around the holster body so it’d lock it in place. Tension from the holster would be your retention mechanism. If you wanted additional you could drill small holes and run some shock cord through it
Any universal holster you get is most likely going to be garbage. Get a kydex holster made from a good reputable maker. That way it will retain your weapon and you don’t need to worry about it falling out. Also dose it HAVE to be a drop holster. Drop holsters are used for specific purposes. You will be better off with a belt holster. The gun won’t move as much, you can get to it faster and it is easier to protect.
Can you talk about the activities that you expect to be doing with a drop holster and a pack with a waist belt? While part of getting a good answer is knowing what types of gear you’re also using, another big part is knowing what your planned activity is.
I’m thinking that you’re going to get into a “no free lunch” type thing. If you’re insistent on using the pack’s waist belt, with a firearm that doesn’t seem to get the attention of many holster makers, you’re going to probably have to find a compromise.
Change firearms to something with more holster options. Probably not the way to go for a few reasons.
Not use the waist belt. You can do this, and move the holster to your belt, but you seem to be stuck on the belt. Ok.
Change carry method. Probably the way to go if you don’t want to do 1 or 2, and can’t find a good drop holster for a Tanfoglio. Drop holsters aren’t optimal for many peoples’ activities, even those who insist on using them.
I’m not you(I get that). But if I were, I’d look at changing to either a chest pack holster like the Hill People Gear product mentioned above, wearing a belt holster under the waist pack, or integrating the holster to your pack (least optimal). These options will depend on your activity.
Another +1 from me for Hill People Gear. I use one of these when I hike. The leaf-eating trail trolls are none the wiser when I go hiking past them. And it’s actually pretty handy for holding land-nav stuff and a snack.
I just started using Blackhawk Serpa and I love it, I had a Safariland 6004 which was nice but the Serpa offers much more and fits me better. They now have attachments you put on your holsters so you can easily remove a holster and put on a different one on the Serpa drop leg platform. so one platform can be used for every firearm you have.
one other thing, is they retail for over $150 but if you take your time and look on ebay you can find brand new ones just as I did 2 weeks ago for $27 shipped, a brand new drop leg holster. Also as long as its brand new with the box and its not the holster you want Blackhawk will accept it as a return and send you the one you want. I bought a berretta holster and I need a sig 2022 so Blackhawk is sending me the sig holster at no extra charge just gotta pay for shipping
