Drone arms race transforms war in Ukraine, with U.S. now learning lessons

An interesting short vid on current state of drone warfare in Ukraine, now doubt what is being learned and developed of great value to the US proxy war:

He talks about CAS EVAC taking a big change in the way it operates and not for the better all due to drones.

I have been meaning to watch this, looks like they may have gotten some decent footage.

Maybe its because they’re Navy but I have a hard time believing they didn’t realize GWOT was different… we’ll see if I can watch any more.

In DS we were called to a Navy Mobile Hospital that was recieving machine gun fire in to the hospital. The Iraqi’s were loving shooting Heavy Machine Guns in to an undefended Hospitals

The Hospitals were at that time certainly incapable of defending themselves.

Not what I meant. The first couple of seconds of his video, he said that the audience was silent because they were scared since no one had told them that the golden hour doesn’t exist anymore. We’ve known that for a long time.

I know old ADCOM guys who are talking about reintroducing the old Genie nuclear rocket as a dronebuster. No fancy GPS or datalinks to jam, overpressure swats 'em out of the sky wholesale. It’s a cheaper weapon than anything today too.

My take, I see the merits but I’d dump the nuke payload and use something like a mini BLU-82 or MOAB to generate the overpressure needed.

Wouldn’t there be a lot of collateral damage with something like that? Also, how would you target them?

If you used a nuclear warhead, yes. If you could figure out how to get overpressure with a conventional explosive in a smaller area, not so much.

And you don’t target, it’s like the explosive equivalent of a shotgun - lob it into the middle of the formation and let the blast wave do the rest. It won’t take as much as when the original Genie was designed to snap Bears’ and Badgers’ backs wholesale…

Ive been reading about graphite Bombs and infra structure damage.

a Swarm of Graphite Drones would be overwhelming.

You’re talking about blasting UAS while they’re in flight though, right? So like using a proximity fuse or something to cause detonation?

Basically, IIRC that was hiw AIR-2A worked. Fuse fired two kilotons as soon as it detected Bears all around or the timer ran out.

Dude, you can’t pop off a nuke to take out a drone swarm. Especially if you were being hit with successive waves of swarms. You’d be opening canned sunshine several times a day!

Obviously. We’re talking a spiritual and conceptual successor using modern energetics, not an exact recreation. I’ll bet a drone doesn’t take as much to swat out of the sky as a Bear either.

A graphite Bomb is intresting because when it explodes Graphite come out. Any expopsed electronics will short circut because graphite conducts electricty.

A graphite bomb will take on an electric substation and immeadiatly knock it out.

Imagine Graphite Drones with a payload capable dumper and a graphite covered body that explodes.

Wire-guided drones wouldn’t be disabled by jamming. I don’t think you’ll find too many wire-guided ones here, as far as domestic defense is concerned.
