I really like the black river tactical gas blocks that allow you to pin it to the barrel yourself. They have always worked well for 4150 m4 type barrels I’ve installed them on. I just got a 416 stainless barrel from black hole weaponry. Is there anything special that needs to be done to drill the stainless barrel that is different than the standard barrel? Hardness drill bit type, cutting fluid etc?
Nothing special is required for stainless.
It’s probably easier than Melonite.
The cobalt drill bit that comes with our pinning kit should work just fine.

My harbor freight drill bits must be junk then (no surprise). I snapped 2 smaller bits last night while spending 30 minutes drilling for my set screw block.
Yeah, the harbor freight drills are crap. I use them sometimes for sacrificial work, the kind that will harm even a good drill.
Use and toss.
Cobalt will be even better than hss.
Stainless isn’t hard to drill, but you want to drop the speed some, and some lubrication goes a long way. Cutting oil is good, but any oil is better than dry. As you get deeper (relative to diameter), you want to back the drill out more often to clear chips and add oil.
So, for a gas block, several times probably starting just before halfway through.
Stainless will work harden, so if the drill is dull, skip and get a sharp one. You’ll make the bottom of the hole so hard you’ll need either a Carbide drill, or go in from the other side.
