I am curious about break in. What set of physical conditions does the shoot one, clean barrel, shoot one, etc process create? I have to be honest, I just don’t get what is trying to be achieved. How does/could that process affect accuracy?
I am new to carbines in the last year and this is a genuine question, not a flippant response.
well im proud to own my dpms. regardless of what the others have to say. Im not an everyday shooter, and i dont carry my own weapons to iraq for covert operations so LMT and Colt and the other high priced weapons are just not worth it for me. yeah as unreasonable as it sounds to spend $1700 on a plinking rifle, it is just out of my realm to go top of the line. ill be fine with what i got. i have heard plenty of good things about them to offset the equal amount of bad stuff i have heard. and that goes for every other weapon i own too. glock, Smith, Walthers, etc. for every bad opinion there is an equal good opinion.
I asked about who was insisting on a specific break-in simply for knowledge.
It won’t hurt a chrome lined barrel (160 rounds is like 1% of the life of the barrel life) and you can get a good zero, but has never been proven to improve precision.
There has been an ongoing “myth bust” on barrel break-in with high-end stainless barrels, if you search for it you will find numerous threads discussing it.
Really, barrel-break in is a tangent in this thread, one that has been covered, not that it is any great sin anyway.
Well I see nothing changes here! Instead of standing by couldn’ted you have ask if he need a hand? Maybe the Newb didn’t lube his weapon, did the initial cleaning on a new gun etc! But I’m sure if he had a DD, Colt or any other weapon you’d have ran right over!
Or not. If the fellow had asked for help, that’s one thing. But some of us don’t mind other people’s business, and I don’t care to become ‘That Guy’, the self-proclaimed expert that seems to haunt nearly every range in the world, loudly dispensing unsolicited advice and instructions to other shooters.
yet you admired him from afar as he had “complications” with his weapon. either you WERE “that guy” but didnt offer a hand, or you really were not paying that much attention to him and he could have very well been just breaking it down every round to …dun dun dun, Break it in?
Who gives a shit. No one was there…wait for your chance to do your “good deed” and do it. There really is no point to chastizing someone for something that happened in the past. Its like high school, you get in a fight and later your friends start with the “Oh I would have…” Oh if I was there I would…" “you know what I would have done”. Dont be THAT guy
Where do these mystical and silly numbers keep coming from? 1700.00 is a lot of AR. Myself and others have shown many times over that you can get one for just under 1000.00 that will be a reliable, functional shooter.
Nothing changes in that those of us who are in the know are not going to recommend a piece of shit to someone.
However, I have been known to help others with lesser AR’s. I usually also take the time to point out some shortcomings and things to look for. I also ask them if they have ever experienced X, Y and Z and when they do I explain to them the causes.
I think I asked you the question before and you dodged the bullet. So, I’ll ask it again.
The issues with DPMS, Bushmaster, et al… are well known. So aside from the whole matierials aspect of it. Can you please enlighten us as to why these companies cannot do simple things like have an F-marked FSB, a real 5.56 chamber, a milspec receiver extension, staked carrier keys and castle nuts?
I would love to hear your response. I posed that question to a few of these companies at SHOT and I got the deer in headlights look.
ill be honest i dont care if you helped him or not. i probably would have struck up conversation if he was right beside me but not from the opposite end of the range. i would have helped if he asked but wouldnt have forced it either. all i was trying to say was that you were saying you were not being the guy that eyeballs everybody and forces your help on them. but you also said that you specifically observed him pulling stuck shells out of his chamber. my only point was that if you werent really paying too much attention to him, it could be possible he was just doing the break in procedure judging from the actions you described.
this thread got way off topic. i mentioned break in procedure as a possible answer and someone came from left field with “break in procedures are a waste” and “DPMS sucks”. who really cares. they guy was either having issues, or breaking in a new gun. the OP swears he was frustrated so we can only believe the guy was having problems. who cares. DPMS Sucks, in some peoples eyes. who cares.
i dont remember mention of a caliber. I only referenced mine and that is was in .308 form, and the amount of research i didnt before spending that kind of money told me there were quiete a few different opinions on them. and majority good. thats why i spent the (and this is where the price came in) $1700 on my .308 with all the goodies. hell, the accessories alone on my rifle are worth more than a grand!
