DPMS G2 Recon barrel nut

A couple companies are now releasing rails, including a “custom” barrel nut, for the G2.
However, I’ve read from a couple abrupt posts on some forums, that people are alluding to the stock AR15 barrel nut can be modified to fit the G2… and a normal AR15 rail.

Is this possible, can a stock AR15 barrel nut be modified to fit a G2 Recon?

If so, what exactly has to be trimmed/modified?

  1. the inside-diameter of the little inner sleeve that holds the barrel in place;
  2. or the entire inner section including the threads?

Thx

A GI AR15 barrel nut would have too much material removed I think. It should be possible to modify old school free float barrel nuts though, by reaming, then re-threading the internal diameter to the DPMS thread pattern for the upper.

It’s a larger ID and OD barrel nut, but there are flutes cut into the ID that correspond with the gas tube clearance that would normally be teeth on an AR15 nut.
