DPMS 308 Gas Block Question

I have just bought myself a DPMS 308 and was wondering about the gas block that came on it. It is gigantic. I want to install a trx emtreme rail or such that the barrel is floated. Can a person grind enough off the block to clear or is it best to just buy a low profile? I am trying to research on scopes and mounts. I am not a spec ops type person but I want good stuff, not that “middle of the mall” junk you see at some gun shows. My range is no more than 600 yds. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Just buy a new one. 30 dollars for piece of mind.

Replace it with a low pro steel or stainless gas block. Yours is aluminum. I’d recommend a BCM low pro.

IMO,

An aluminum gas block is just asking for trouble.

Ditch it and get a quality low pro block.

Is there a free float handguard that uses the original barrel nut instead of a proprietary barrel nut. Like the centurion rail does on 223/5.56 guns. I like to do things myself and don’t want to buy tools for a one time procedure. I can always just pay a smith to do the install otherwise. I want a 12" or longer handguard on it when all said and done. Tube or quad doesn’t really matter to me. The only thing that will be added is a bipod.

Thanks for the help fellas

I believe the Apex Gator Grip uses the standard barrel nut.
