Dog Owners, important recall intel

If you have any of these brands, throw them out now! Although the doses not found to be lethal, how/why on earth there’s pentobarbital in these products makes no sense at all. My guess is, they are contract produced in China. That’s often the common denominator in weird chit like this. Usually it’s cross contamination, but I doubt very much there’s a plant that produces pentobarbital and pet food, so this was in really a mystery.

WASHINGTON –

Retailers nationwide pulled at least 31 varieties of dog food off the shelves after a months-long investigation found the food contained the euthanasia drug pentobarbital.

Days after lab tests were released, Smucker’s, the owner of almost all the brands in question, announced a voluntary withdrawal or products including Gravy Train, Kibbles ‘N Bits, Skippy and Ol’ Roy lines of canned food.

Retailers, including the nation’s largest, Walmart, removed it from all 4,700 stores.

Terrible food to begin with. Those are cheap for a reason.

Yup, wouldn’t feed my dog that garbage anyway, but that’s another issue really.

For a second, from the title I thought you had lost it and were talking recalling dogs.

I think that junk is in there because they are processing carcasses of animals that have been euthanized…

Makes sense, yup.

I only feed my dogs Fromm. It’s one of the only brands that triple tests it’s food products for chemicals and dangerous bacteria during the manufacturing process. I do not believe they’ve ever had a recall either.

Blue Buffalo for my little buddy…

Orjen for our 2 GSDs

Shit.
I meant to lace the cat food.

Our GSD eat Taste of the Wild, and that is the only food we feed them. No people food, no cheap dog food, no garbage.

Our vet approved it, and the research we have done online, as well as talking with other persons say it is one of the better pet foods.

My wife - a veterinarian - confirms that the source was very likely euthanized animals. Quite common.

geezer john

My pup gets Merrick limeted ingredient chicken. My vet feeds her dog the same. What a shame to loose a pet to something like this.

Guess I’m a bad dog dad.
I feed my 14yr old lab-mix purina beneful and 4 health.
He got sick and wouldnt eat anything but gravy-train for a week, but hes better now.

Thanks for the heads-up, we’ll be sure to stay away from that crap in the future.

I had a German Shorthaired Pointer for sixteen years, and did a lot of bird hunting with him. I miss him, need to get another. Ironically, his name was “Mauser”.

Our GSD is on Fresh Pet Select. She has allergies to flax seed and flax seed oil. So a refrigerated, high protein and fresh veggies diet is what she gets.

Thanks for the heads up, but this is why I also give my dogs really, really good dry dog food (Blue Buffalo) rather than cheap canned dog food. If I had the time I’d probably home cook meals for them, but I don’t have the time and making sure they are getting things like calcium can be tricky with home brew dog food.

Anyone concerned just make sure your dog food, or the ingredients aren’t coming from China at a minimum. They are willing to poison people for profit, they could care less about your dog.

I don’t purchase those brands ever, but thank you for the heads up on this Will.

I feed my dog a prey model raw diet. Commercial pet food (even the high end brands like Orijen, Acana, etc) are highly processed crap in a bag.

We used to do raw as well when we only had one. We have two large GSDs(male is just shy of 100lbs) now and a medium sized mutt. We attempted it for about 6 months but the logistics of raw with 3 dogs was not fun so moved to the best dry we could find and supplement with raw, eggs, stock, etc periodically.
