Does this look unsafe to anyone else?

This upper was posted on another Forum by someone very happy that they had ordered it.

Besides the obviously silly name, it just looks “off” to me. Like it would be almost unsafe to shoot.

Those flutes seem like they would play havoc with the harmonics and it seems to get really thin near the muzzle.

:bad:

The thing looks hideous, and I certainly wouldn’t buy one…

As far as it being unsafe, I don’t see how it would be any less safe than a pencil barrel.

Like my wife would say, “It’s…different.”

Looks safe to me kind of cool. Just another kind of fluting I have seen it done on a few bolt guns, cuts more weight than standard fluting.

I think Eddie Ecklund got that font from Diablo, the video game.

Finned barrels work just fine on Tommy guns and Yugo RPK’s.

Radial flutes would cool better due to improved convection but wouldn’t maintain stiffness like axial flutes.

I’m guessing that’s why it’s not a problem, and maybe even a benefit on something like a Tommy gun. Depending on the purpose of the carbine in the link, that may or may not be an issue.

Hey, what kind of barrel is that?

It’s a Honey Dipper!

Nice barrel stupid.

it’s “ribbed” for pleasure

I don’t think it’s unsafe.

Not as stiff I suppose, but depending one what you compare it to, not sure it matters. If you think of it as a heavy barrel with a bunch of grooves, it’s somewhat less stiff. If you think of it as a pencil barrel with a bunch of reinforcing bands, dang, it seems pretty strong! Bet it cools better.

And I have to give them credit for not doing things the way everybody else does-- bit of a bold stroke I’d say.

Plus, I’m not gonna deny it… looks Thompsonish=looks cool.

Doesn’t LWRC do something like that under the hand guards on some of their barrel profiles?

LWRC did this on a barrel for their IAR. From what I heard, they never released any into the wild.

I have a finned barrel on my tricked out suppressed Ruger 10/22…

After dumping a mag the barrel is still cool. Looks cool, but not for an AR IMHO.

MOUNT-N-SLOT

.

Like others have said, with those ribs, it has to have lost some of its stiffness.

I’d like to see it take the DD Torture Test. I’d bet you could shoot around corners with it afterwards.

To each his own…

But maybe it’s just me…

.

I’ve shot finner AR barrels. They cool down great even with suppressors. They seemed to work well on old Tommy Guns to boot!

lol Honey Dipper?

Looks interesting but as Ned and others said - does not appear to pose a ‘problem’.

The Czechs did this to the ZB-26 but that was an air cooled LMG, not a semi-auto carbine.

Surely it will be good for dissipating heat. Other then that I think it looks hideous on an AR. Kudos for doing something a bit different though.

Theres a pic of an AR with wood furniture floating around here somewhere, they could slap that barrel on it, and get a Thompson/Stoner lovechild.
I dont dis-like the look though, its just a little differant.

There shouldn’t be anything unsafe about it.
It does look like the fins are a spiral, though, like a Japanese Nambu LMG, instead of like a Thompson.
