Hey all.
a friend of mine is looking into buying a 6400R, because it comes with a low-pro fsb and a ff rail. He says he only plans on adding an optic and leaving it as is.
My questions to 6400R owners are:
Do you like the stock rail?
Does the barrel nut cause a problem?
How are the stock flip ups?
Have you modified it in any way?
Would you reccomend the R over a regular 6400?
I am asking because of the amount of mods I have done to my mt6400 (ff rail, trigger, buis, optics), is it worth it to get a mt6400 and do all of these mods or just buy the 6400R and put an optic on it?
Obviously we are from nj dealing with the MT series. I don’t want him to base his purchase on my opinion alone, as I have never handled a 6400R.
I am also in NJ, and I have 2 MT6400R’s and a MT6400 (ban state 6940/6920’s).
I like the 6400R’s monolithic upper…rail equipped and free floating g right out of the box. It is an outstanding rifle, without a doubt the most accurate ‘rack grade’ AR I have ever shot.
The problem for some folks is that you are ‘stuck’ with the rail, no option to have a longer rail on the rifle. No issues with the barrel nut…not sure why there would be.
The flip up sights are pretty slick, and work well.
I live in a ban state, I had Adco pin and weld a comp on mine, and I changed the charging handle to a BCM Gunfighter unit (I do this on all my AR’s), but they are stock other than that.
I use a TA01NSN ACOG on one of them, and am undecided for optics on the other.
I like both the 6400 and the 6400R for different reasons, and am hesitant to recommend one over the other. They are both excellent rifles.

shameless plug, but I have a preban colt with a 12" jp tube on the EE right now. I’m not sure what these new Colts are going for, but you may want to check mine out.
The monolithic design is great, but the length is the real issue. The rail on the R is short, which prevents you from using the “support hand far out” technique taught at some places these days.
I tried to pick up a 6400R about 2 years ago and could not locate one and Displaced Texan has two! Guess I was going to the wrong dealer.
I just ended up buying a 6920 upper a couple months ago and cut off the bayo lug and pinned a brake on it.
You said your friend is only going to run an optic. If that it is all then the FF rail is not necessary. He can save a couple of bucks and just get the 6400.
Not sure if you are aware or not but your friend can purchase a 6920 it just has to be made NJ complaint (post-ban) before he takes delivery of it. That means pinned stock, shaved bayo lug, flashhider removed and a comp permanently installed. I know ADCO can do this and I believe G&R Tactical can as well. There is also at least one dealer in NJ that you can have a 6920 sent to and he can do the mods before your friend takes delivery.

He would only add an optic if it was an R because it would already have flip up sights and a rail. If he went with a 6400 he’d need to shave the fsb and add rails and buis as well as the optic

For what it’s worth, I bought one of my 6400R’s through my dealer, and the other on GunBroker. They are a bit hard to find.
You CAN have a 6920/6940 made ban compliant before delivery.
The reason I buy the Match Target series of rifles is because NJ gun law specifies that the MT rifles are allowed.
I have a paranoid delusion that our lovely lawmakers would use the ‘substantially identical’ clause in the NJ gun law to make the case that 6920/6940’s are illegal.

Nah, I don’t think you need a tinfoil hat, your not the first person to feel that way in NJ that is for sure.
However I do disagree because as you know many other AR manufacturers offer post-ban rifles that are sold in many shops/stores throughout NJ which APPEAR to look like their non-compliant rifles. They do not offer a seperate post-ban rollmark lower receiver like Colt does. Also the only two Colts that are banned by name are the AR-15 and CAR-15.
Of course all of this is absurd, but it is, what it is. I would have no problem owning an M4 marked lower in NJ so long as it was post-ban compliant.
