Does an M14 really turn cover into concealment? Part 6: 50m concrete

M1A vs. AR at 50 meters against concrete blocks. The M1A will be firing M80 FMJ while the AR is firing M855. In previous tests we looked at the effects of only a single round each and at very close range. This time we will put the AR against the M1A head to head, with as many rounds fired as are necessary to reduce the target to pieces too small to reasonably hit. Both shooters will attempt to fire their rifle as quickly as they can to make accurate hits. This is an informal test, of course, but we’ll be looking to see which rifle can reduce the concrete “cover” to concealment more quickly and which can do it with less rounds fired as well as which uses a greater percentage of its available ammunition. Because 7.62x51mm weighs twice as much as 5.56x45mm, the M1A gets one 20 round magazine and the AR gets two. Which rifle wins and on what grounds? Will the heavier recoil of the M1A allow the AR to finish more quickly? Will the greater mass of the .30 caliber crush the block with fewer rounds fired?

Target is a two gallon bucket filled with Quickrete with aggregate.

I wonder how it would have turned out if the blocks were rebar reinforced. If there was several sticks of rebar inside then the block may have not just exploded from the 308 and it might had to have several more hits to break it up.

That’s an interesting point. I’m kind of getting burned out on the whole 5.56 vs 7.62 thing, but if I ever go back to it, I may test that.

7.62 NATO will always win in this type of contest. The USMC tested 5.56, 7.62 and other rounds against walls of brick, block and wood and 7.62 NATO wins. The Marines even had furniture like desks and metal filing cabinets as well as dummies wearing body armor inside the buildings they were shooting into. People might as well stop with these tests because 5.56 is never going to best 7.62 NATO in any of them.

Yeah, I saw that. It was kind of bizarre. They used plastic or fiberglass mannequins as people and the impacts were spread all over. My own tests are very informal, of course, but that “test” made mine look downright scientific.

You’re hilarious if you think your test is better than the USMC tests. There’s nothing scientific about your test. In a real world situation I’m not going to be shooting at someone hiding behind a bucket of concrete.

No, of course but. My videos have little to no scientific merit. I was being hyperbolic to point out the total lack of controls in the Marine Corps video. They randomly sprayed ammo at a building filled with various objects. No conclusions whatsoever can be drawn from such a “test”.

They didn’t randomly spray bullets at a building. The firearms used were locked in a weapons vise and shot straight on and then at a 45 degree angle. They shot a typical red brick wall, a cinder block wall and wood wall, the types of construction you’d most likely run into. They also fired at auto glass, sandbags, logs and looses dirt. You seem to think the USMC is some mall ninja organization just randomly spraying bullets at objects via mag dumps so there’s no merit in continuing.
