DOE wants "Heckler and Koch M16's"

Urgently, evidently:

HK M16s huh, maby 416s?

DOE NEST get a lot toys.

Not just NEST. They have personnel assigned to protect all nuclear power plants, labs, convoys, etc. Thought ibread a few years back they have Dillon Miniguns mounted at some locations.

Oh I know, its just anytime the DOE is mentioned NEST is the first thing that pops into my mind when I think of weapon acquisitions. I know a guy who is former 75th that use to ride shotgun on trucks for them. They have a lot of stuff going on all the time and for the most they do a really good job at staying low key.

$2472 apiece for the 60 requested units plus extra mags. I would think .gov could get a better price than that.

Wonder if they’re the 14.5" or 10.4" variants?

I thought the nuclear power plants were using the Red Jacket “Game Changer”? Wasn’t that what the 2 part episode was all about? :D:o

Seems like you would want to have nukes protecting a nuclear plant and assets.

Hornady developed a load for nuclear power plant security…

Is that kinda like “We had to destroy the village in order to save it”?

Double tap.

Like the $800 toilet seats? Saving $$$ in the right places never seemed a strong point of .gov.

Now cutting corners where no corners should be cut, that’s another issue.

The Gestapo needs to be armed.

NEST isn’t an armed SOF force – NEST’s job is to FIND active material, and it is up to others to go get it and secure it. I used to be a NEST member as a USAF nuke weapons maintenance officer stationed at one of the depot maintenance facilities out in Nevada. NEST membership is a decidedly non-militarized group of science and technician types who use and maintain specialized radiological search equipment.

The DoE OST, and actual military SOF forces, are the ones who go after the nuclear/radiological once it is found. The OST folks are the ones who get the “toys”.

That linked request pretty specifically identifies that it is INEL that wants to buy the rifles, so it seems pretty obvious that they would be for OST or the actual security at INEL.

Not for OST or DoE specifically. These are site specific purchases made by contractors who are charged with operating the site by DoE.

Good to know Hacker, thanks for the insight!
