Doc: 75gr BTHP Terminal Ballistics?

At what velocity does this type of round no longer provide decent fragmentation and expansion?

I hope im not beating this topic to death, I went through the posts and couldn’t find anything.

I would never presume to speak for the Doc; however, you might find this info helpful.

The 75gr .223 only fragments out to 115 yards (from 16" barrel)? Not what I expected.

If the above is true, is it due to the round (T1 vs T2) or the velocity (.223 vs 5.56)?

What kind of fragmemntation range from the 68gr .223?

It looks to be velocity based on those numbers.

The FPD from a 20" barrel seems to match up with the 5.56 from a 14.5" barrel in both velocity(+11 FPS) and fragmentation ranges.

Molon: You wouldn’t happen to have a similar chart for some of the most popular 6.8SPC loads, would you?

Negative Ghost Rider.

They have a similar chart for the 6.8 over on 68forums. It is pretty good, has different barrel lengths, and bullets, frag and/or expansion ranges listed.

Here’s the chart from the 68forums. This is Paulo Santos’es work, he did a great job! The Maximum Performance Range is the range where the bullet will expand and/or fragment effectively…

Have seen son kill two whitetail doe with a Colt 16-in 9-twist and TAP 75 (3 years ago, don’t know from t1 or t2), range 85 to 95 yards in both cases.

Tissue damage about the same as .243 85 BTHP, 6.8 115 OTM, or .260 120 BT; not as dramatic as a 150 gr. .308 softpoint.

Results certainly the same: 150-200 lb. mammals die fairly quickly from thoracic cavity shots or drop instantly with CNS hit from any centerfire.

Son has decided to do most of his game shooting with a .22/250 loaded with 53 gr. TSX, but will provide him an AR with Doc recommended loads in case of widespread social problems.

Very solid info, thanks.

Anyone have any info on the Hornady 75gr 5.56mm TAP T2 out of a 10.5" barrel?

What kind of info you looking for? That is one of the best loads out there for short barrels according to Doctor Roberts research. I personally use it for my 10.5". So far as fragmentation range, depends on your rifle but from the chrono results I’ve seen, it tends to be roughly 40 yards.
