Do you overtake marked LE on the interstate?

Easy enough question. I just got kidnapped by a bunch of morons creating a roadblock doing ~62 in a 65 because a marked patrol car (from a city PD in a completely different county) was just chilling in the slow lane.

I normally go a fair bit over the speed limit (Keeping up with traffic ) However, If an LEO is doing 10+ over the limit I won’t pass him as I’m not that ballsy. But if the guy isn’t even doing the limit?? Got me thinking what type of people drive like that. Wonder if the 3 lead cars had warrants?

I have no problem passing a marked patrol car.

People get scared when the see cops, even if they are doing no wrong.

Come around the corner on the Freeway and nothing but brake lights, just because a cop was sitting along side the Freeway already deal with someone else , the bad part was this whole group was doing the speed limit, before they saw the cop.

This.

What sucks is being behind the folks that will not pass him, even when he is under the limit, and you know he is laughing at them.

Just bc they are engaged, does not mean they will not leave and pick you up. Ask me how I know lol…Jeep wrangler without seatbelts, doors, mirrors, etc. I was rebuilding it for a friend in the Marines while he was deployed and had just got the axles and Trans back in. Taking it for a test drive. He had sympathy and let me go, but he sure wrapped up his ticket writing on his previous engagement to run into his car and whip around and blue light me!

If they are going under, I would normally pass.

I’ve talked to a lot of cops about this. And a lot of times they hate this too. I live south of Ft Worth and a lot of FWPD guys live in my town. When they try to get to work in the morning 15 minutes north, every car in front of, next to, or behind them will slow down. Effectively boxing them in as well.

I have no problem passing them. Do it all the time.

As for the cop laughing… Not always. Some are just jerks trolling.

I was on the interstate and a cop was doing 60 mph in a 75 mph…so everyone was doing like 62. When I finally got passed him and back in the right lane and got back to the posted speed limit he pulled me over. Why you ask. He said I was following the car in front of me too close. Right…

The ticket was well worth the look on his face when he asked me “So, you know why I pulled you over?”…my response was, “Just to meet the only person in the state of Texas that drives the posted speed limit?” He did not think it was funny. …I did :jester:

Every time I drove my wife’s old car I felt I was being kidnapped as well!

It was a 2006 Red Hemi Charger. In my area (NoVa/DC) there used to be a bunch of marked and unmarked Silver Hemi Charger VSP cars up and down I95.

Every Time I drove it on I95, people would slow down in all three lanes and pretty much rolling block me thinking I was a cop.

Every. Single. Time.

Annoyed the shit out of me. As fun as it was to get on the gas in that car once in a while, I’m happy its long gone.

I passed an Ego-Trooper locked on 55 pulling a train. Set my cruise at +1 and he bullhorned me, “speed limit is 55.” But knowing MN progs, it may have well been a central planning directive across the metro. Like the saturation jaywalk ticketing occasionally downtown.

I pass them as long as I don’t have to go more like 5-7 over the speed limit.

I pass them unless they are close to the posted limit…

I hate driving a patrol car on the interstate (county guy) because of what everyone else has posted in this thread. I try to get to the fast lane as quickly as possible and stay there doing 5 over, unless I’m running code 3, until I reach my exit.

In my personal car, if a cop is driving under the limit I have no issue passing him.

No, because why give backdoor tax collectors a reason for you to fork over 200 bucks because you were doing 67 in a 65 zone.

Would pass only if I can within the speed limit. Some will pull you over for a few miles over the limit.

Better safe than spend $80+ or however much speeding tickets are these days.

That’s 2-3 boxes of practice ammo… tsk tsk… :stuck_out_tongue:

I have no problems passing, but i stick to the speed limit when i do so.

You mean if the cop is doing under the posted limit…will I pass him?

Yes…why not?

Late 40s guy in an older well kept Volvo…not usually the guy the marked units go flying after. Especially if I am just doing the posted limit.

Probably the only situation left in this country where it pays to be white! LOL

That.

This is a damned if you do damned if you don’t. I hate the people I work with that camp out in a lane right at the limit backing up everyone. I on the other hand jump in the left lane ASAP an cruise along at 15 over. I’ve gotten 2 complaints over the years from phone patrol complaining that my tag number was driving to fast. What do you do. David

Judging from the responses in this thread, you’re right. LE get hassled for going too slowly or too fast. Commuters get hassled for driving too slowly behind LE or risk a citation for passing over the limit. No one wins.

I propose every LEO gets a teleport machine.

I’ll stick to about 5-7 over. On my normal AM commute I often see city police outta their jurisdiction and treat them like any other car, more often than not passing them so fast they can’t read my plate.
