Do we need to bring back Asylum's?

In light of recent events, I think it’s seriously time to reopen mental health Facilities.

Over the course of her decade long struggle with mental illness, sometimes Sophie has been able to function on her own, sometimes she’s needed community support, and sometimes she’s been so psychotic that she’s needed inpatient care to protect her from harming herself.
To be sure, some mental health advocates shun any talk of inpatient care, contending that even the most seriously mentally ill people don’t benefit from hospital care. Quite understandably, they fear asylums that warehoused and abused people with mental illness as the rest of society forgot about them. But Sophie’s experiences assure me that they are wrong. There is a real need for aggressively expanding the presence of residential mental health facilities.

However, we have come a long way in the last 40-70 years, and the asylum model can work. I believe there are people that need long term mental health care, and that an institutional approach to mental health can provide benefit to those that need help, by providing a safe refuge and a high level of care that is needed, and benefit our greater society by reducing the homeless and helping law enforcement focus on true criminals and not people with mental health issues that often become criminals due to the mental health.

Yes. There needs to be a trend in building back long-term institutions to care for the severely and chronically mentally ill that are dangerous to themselves and others. Anyone that can say that inpatient care in hospitals do not benefit the mentally ill are too stupid to be taken seriously. Many a life has been saved by even a brief inpatient stay.

I don’t know if we need the crazy pads from the 1930s, but LOTS of people should be in supervised care who are currently just walking around medicated.

This is not the first time, even Adam Lanza’s mom eventually figured out he was too dangerous and needed to be placed somewhere, unfortunately for her she didn’t do it soon enough. But like Adams mom, who he killed first, too many moms are unwilling to admit that “their baby” (who in most cases is actually an adult) has serious mental problems and is a serious danger to himself and others.

I’m sure it must suck to put your kid in a special needs school and it must be almost impossible to put your kid in a medical facility BUT we don’t want to be killed by your kid who has serious f’ing problems. It sucks, life ain’t fair but we have to stop catering to the extremes.

The same society that bans peanut butter sandwiches for the entire school because ONE KID has peanut allergies now puts all of those kids at risk because they won’t remove ONE KID who is a serious danger to himself and others. And they tell us it’s all about safety. How many times does this need to play out again and again.

Then you get to adults that have already threatened to shoot up a military institution. Yeah maybe they needed to look at that guy a little longer.

Yeah those seemed to have had a lot of people with various mental disorders using their pro status to abuse people there suffering from mental disorders.

That is one of the best points(topic and clear/concise) I have ever seen.

It would definitely reduce crime. A decent percent of criminal damage and assault is committed by mentally ill who live on the streets. They end up doing very little time in jail for most crimes because they are mentally ill. The courts will put them in a program but they quickly fall out and end up back on the streets.

There’s been a couple dozen over the years that I’ve dealt with. Some are still around, sone have flat out disappeared, some have finally done something violent enough to spend a long time in prison, and many are dead.

Never should have got rid of them, just needed better oversight. Reagan blew that one.

The need for them never went away…just another of modern society’s failures.

And could argue that criminal mentality in itself is a mental disorder on some level. Usually it’s a combination of a sociopath, complete lack of impulse control and massive entitlement combined with the delusion that it is all somehow sustainable. Obviously not all criminals fall into this category, but those who live their lives as criminals typically do.

Nothing is ever there fault, no matter what kind of horrible shit they’ve done to another person, they usually present their situation as beyond their control as if no alternative existed for them and whenever possible the blame is placed on the victim who either left something unlocked, flaunted their wealth or simply was outdoors after dark. I’ve watched video interviews of people who raped and murdered children and they have difficulty saying what they did was even wrong, at best they offer a very insincere “I feel bad for them” which of course would never stop them from doing it again.

That there are kiddie rapers (and I don’t mean the 19 year old guy with the 15 year old girlfriend, although that is still pretty sketchy shit) who have been released from jail as if their preference for prepubescent children is going to somehow change is just appealing.

“Do we need to bring back Asylum’s?”
Or-
Cut to the chase and go straight to Gulags?
It’s coming.

That’s the rub. On the one hand, we do need somewhere to sequester the chronically dangerous to self/others, and support those who otherwise need inpatient care, but there are too many Leftist Extremists in Psych who have masturbatory fantasies about weaponizing commitment power to deny us all vote, voice, arms and other fundamental civil rights. On the other side of the coin, the D’s will never allow REAL inpatient care because they bank on an insane electorate as a core constituency…

The idea and intentions are good, but we have to be EXTREMELY careful about reopening the asylums not becoming an opening of Pandora’s Box.

Yes. There are too many dirty shit bags on the streets. Lock 'em all up or issue hunting tags to cull the scum.

With the powers that be the denizens of any new asylums will surely be Tea Party / MAGA types, not the criminally insane or lifetime drug abusers.

Exactly. And then they’d cast ballots on their behalf of course.

1955 161 Million Americans.
Today 332 Million Americans.

1955 560 K in Mental Asylums.
Today 35 K in Mental Asylums.

Bring back the Asylums.

The problem is in 1955 how many of those 560k really needed to be there? And today, John Hinkley and Leslie Van Houten are walking around free.

I would agree, but I’m willing to let a board of Proffesionals decide the best treatment.
I think it’s kind of cruel everytime I see some homeless guy holding a two or three way conversation with himself as he haphazardly negotiates traffic. Between that and watching them eat out of trash cans, I really think we could and should do better.

We definitely need to do better by those people. Diagnose them before they murder people because of the voices, etc. They didn’t ask to be that way; some people just need help getting through the day, and can’t live independently. Is that a blow to freedom? What about people’s right to not be killed by a lunatic? The rights argument is what’s holding this up. To boot, how about a year mandatory rehab for drug addicts? 30 day programs have little effect. UK’s recidivism rate is 1/10th of the US because they have mandatory rehab and people have to do the programs to get out. I heartily support MH institutions, minus the mad scientist experimentation for the MH and DA population. Take the money that’s pumped into ineffective programs, prison expenses, etc. and put it into decreased homelessness and crime.

That’s a problem that needs to be addressed, but the medical professionals(syphilis experiment stuff, last few years, and so on) have revealed themselves to have a lot of problems too that need to be addressed.

I think cost to society vs cost of treatment, we should at a minimum house them in a basic drug treatment facility set up like dorms. But first we need to take better care of our military veterans, then the homeless. There is no reason violent felons should have a better quality of life.

This is where I am on the issue of asylums. If properly handled then yes, absolutely bring them back as they are sorely needed. But I do not trust the government to do the right thing and any power given will be abused.
