Do I need to check headspace?

I recently purchased a S&W M&P 15 TS model ar. I have exactly 250 rounds fired no malfunctions. I plan on changing the bolt carrier group out for a Bravo Company M16 which from what I have read is as good as a BCG can get. Can I get away with just a swap? I don’t have the tools for the headspace check but if I have to so be it. Any info is greatly appreciated ShooterJD

You don’t “need” to, but it sounds like it would give you peace of mind in doing so. I’ve personally never checked headspace and all of my rifles are just fine. If you use sub-par parts, I would definitely check it, but with BCM you should be good to go.

FWIW, the BCG in the S&W’s are just fine. I’ve been running one in my carbine for a little over 2 years with zero problems. If the bolt pops, it will be replaced with a BCM, but the carrier will stay.

No need.

With so few rounds on the barrel, and a brand new bolt, the odds are that you will be fine and don’t NEED to check the head space, but you would be relying on the premise that out of spec parts didn’t leave the factory. That is most likely the case. Checking headspace is easy, cheap, and eliminates any doubt. Your choice.

ARs only have out-of-spec headspace if the bolt or barrel is defective.

Not entirely accurate getting the correct gage isn’t always easy and they can cost 40.00+. In this scenario I would say replace the bolt or BCG and move on.

if you are not experiencing any problems with only having 250 rounds through it i would save the 200 plus dollars on a bcm bcg and gauge and buy ammo and shoot it. no need to upgrade just to upgrade at this point.

Double down…

The BCG you have is fine. If you’re interested in keeping a spare on hand, pick up a complete bolt assembly. Carriers rarely need replacement.

In my opinion, if you use new or like new components from reputable companies, checking headspace on a new build is not an issue with the AR platform. That being said, I check headspace on everything I build or rebarrel.

When you pick up spent brass during range outings, check some of it closely for issues that may be developing. As money becomes available, it does not hurt to have a set of headspace gauges available for performing scheduled PM’s as your rifle/carbine wears.

I check my headspace after every shot. :suicide2: Never can be too careful!!
