Discreet Rifle Case

glad some have posted about using great stuff foam. you can also just hose it in and carve it out if you’re into that. spray adhesive works to tack the felt or whatever kind of cloth covering on to the cut foam. here’s a DIY link …

Another option that’s not as good at protecting, but very discreipt is a bat bag. I live in an apt and don’t want my neighbors that watch me come and go knowing what guns i have. If i’m heading out with the m4gery and a pistol or two i just wrap it in a towel or two and toss it in a bat bag. bat bags have plenty of pockets for eyes, ears, ammo, holsters, whatever…the drawback is that they’re soft cases so you have to be gentle. It did work at being very very sneaky though. just food for thought if you’re relatively broke and want something cheap and sneaky.

The problem with the spray foams, the kind you get at Lowe’s or Home Depot for sealing up holes in foundations and so forth, is that it isn’t resilient at all. Once it sets up good and hard, you crunch it in and it stays crunched.

Plus it is pretty hard. I have had it used to ship things. I bought a set of headers for a motorcycle I had a long time ago and they came bagged and then foamed in place. However, that was a one time use deal.

Buying the foam that is made for the purpose for which we want to use it is the best idea in my opinion. It will protect the rifle from damage, keep it quiet, and last for years without noticeable deterioration, particularly if it has a cloth covering.

One additional note. I’d not stack the extra magazines all in one slot. If you do, they’ll be more likely to get damaged is the case is dropped and they’ll chafe each other during normal use. It’s a much better idea, again in my opinion, if you have individual slots for each magazine and that those slots be tight enough to hold the magazine in place pretty firmly.

Anyhow, good luck to everyone trying this, please post how it works out. You can’t have too much knowledge on this, or most other things.

In Wisconsin, it is illegal to transport a firearm unless it is encased in container designed specifically for the purpose of transporting a firearm.

Here, it’s the law so you may want to check up - I’ve seen several cases that I’d love to roll with for fishing rods, etc.

I can cite the law if you need - a cursory search for it didn’t yield it immediately so I’ll hold on that search until it is demanded. (ok ok I’m not THAT lazy)

167.31 Safe use and transportation of firearms and
bows. (1) DEFINITIONS. In this section:

(b) “Encased” means enclosed in a case that is expressly made
for the purpose of containing a firearm and that is completely
zipped, snapped, buckled, tied or otherwise fastened with no part
of the firearm exposed.

167.31(2) PROHIBITIONS; MOTORBOATS AND VEHICLES; HIGHWAYS AND
ROADWAYS. (a) Except as provided in sub. (4), no person may
place, possess or transport a firearm, bow or crossbow in or on a
motorboat with the motor running, unless the firearm is unloaded
or unless the bow or crossbow is unstrung or is enclosed in a carry-
ing case.

In other words, check your local laws…

That’s fucked up.

That would be difficult to enforce.

What about my modified guitar or sports cases are not “expressly made for the purpose of containing a firearm and that is completely…”? I do indeed expressly make them for that purpose. There’s no further provision for who had to manufacture it, nor what form it had to take. Vague.

What if a tacti-gear producer made a gun case in the shape of a guitar? (Oh, Eggroll, how about it?)

The statutory intent would be to ensure citizens are complying with the balance of the provisions…“completely zipped, snapped, buckled, tied or otherwise fastened with no part of the firearm exposed.” Not rolling guns in blankets.

Interesting…

Exactly. When you redesign the interior and remanufacture it expressly for carrying a firearm, you’re done.

Sounds like the letter AND spirit of the law was met to me.

Just don’t be carrying your Glock around in an un-remanufactured fruit basket. 'kay?

try a golf bag (nike weekender) or a soft ball bat bag

I use a no-name tactical black zip-up padded case, but I put it into an extra-large duffle bag from a big-name outdoor gear maker. It’s big enough that I have room for a dozen or so IPSC targets, a spotting scope, and some other loose stuff.

Most people never look twice at me–the few comments that I have gotten were about camping. The main problem is avoiding the temptation to load it so full of stuff that I have trouble lifting it.

what about the maxpedition discreet rifle case http://amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002XLLBLG?dpm=1&qid=1339375826&ref_=mp_s_a_1&sr=8-1

Been looking at guitar cases myself and noticed that the soft cases are hit or miss. Some are cheap with thin foam linings that might even be so bad as to ‘print’ the rifle, or at least would sag at the bottom showing that it’s clearly not a typical guitar housed within.

A hard case would be better in that regard, plus you can slap some band and musical gear maker stickers on it for added camo. Generally the soft bags don’t have an exterior that will adhere stickers well.

Downside to a hard case is you have to cut and position foam yourself. Soft case comes ready to go but you can’t camo it with stickers easily and you may have to buy a higher quality one in order to get reasonable foam cushioning.

Save a bunch of money and get this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002TUSRTA/
Fits a 16" AR perfectly.

I’ve purchased a Louisville Slugger bat bag, it even has wheels on it and enough room for plenty of range or field gear.

LaRue has a nice one.

I use tennis racket bags and Husky 30" toolboxes. They each will hold two rifles broken down.

Lets see the Husky setup, please:)

I have an Emdom TNT GYM-E (Tactical Non-Tactical GreY Man Extended) Bag (I went with the TNT GYM-E over the TNT GYM because I have a 20" barrel). I’m REALLY pleased with it:
