This. I recently purchased two of them and for the price, they are stellar cases. They still have em at Natchez for $50 each.
When I want to be really discreet, I use a Nike baseball bat bag.
Looks like a duffel bag for the gym. Doesn’t look like a conversation starter. Holds guns.
There is a very simple and eloquent reply should such situations arise.

My carbine fits perfectly in a “3/4” or “student” case.
I was in a similar position, looking for a discrete bag, a few months ago and started by looking for bags that were 24" long, so I could fit a broken down 14.5 upper/lower combo. I looked in non-gun places, such as gym bags and from companies that would not typically be associated with firearms. While I like many of the discrete bags from companies like LaRue, they still call out “firearm” to me and likely anyone with any firearms knowledge and an ounce of curiosity. I do have a burgundy BFG discrete bag - nice, but more conspicuous than the gym bag.
Here was the winner for me, due to size, lower compartment, and option to use backpack straps, on sale for $45 . . .
The bottom section is about 24-25 inches long and I put in a piece of closed cell foam custom cut to fit my needs. The top section is perfect for everything else. I wasn’t sure about quality, but reviews I found were good and it has held up so far. Shouts out “gym clothes”.
When I was searching, other contenders were:
-Timbuk2 messenger bag - XL size
-Black Diamond demon duffel bag - I may customize one of these down the road because they are such high quality and would be good for a relatively heavy load.
-Patagonia Black Hole duffel bag
Another +1 for the DAP discreet case, a few of my friends have them and they’re great, not huge and bulky and well made. Bummed I didn’t get a gold one before they sold out.
When I lived in the city, I used a large, lockable toolbox for ARs. Husky makes one that is just long enough for a 16" upper to fit beside the lower.
I also used a double tennis racquet bag. I got 2 SBRs in there, and the padding between them provided protection.
Another option is a diving flipper bag. I have seen some that are the right size and shape, but look nothing like a gun bag.
The best part is, that unlike a guitar case, NO ONE will ask to see your tennis racquet or flippers. And as long as you don’t leave them unattended, theft isn’t an issue at all with all three choices. Best of all? THEY’RE CHEAP! The purpose-built bags cost a SHITLOAD of money, and they do the same thing as a $40 tennis bag.
I tend to believe someone might be mugged for their guitar, but probably not for their tennis or swim gear

A buddy of mine had the 511 covert bag at Pat Rogers carbine operator class. It was perfect and drew a lot of attention. It looked like a skate board case.
My only issue was that it didn’t have a stiffener in the back.

With that seperate bottom compartment, that High Sierra “Crunk Trunk” bag fits my needs perfectly. Thanks for suggesting it. Mine will show up in a week. I just need some foam to set it up the way I need it.
Man, I love that - too bad they don’t make a version that will hold a 20" upper (or a chopped to 18").
Glad it worked for someone. I am still happy with mine and use it several times a week. I used a layer of .5 inch closed-cell foam in the bottom of the lower compartment, then 1 inch closed-cell cut for my upper and lower (this provides a nice support structure around the upper/lower). I then put a 1 inch layer of open-cell foam (much softer than closed cell) in the bottom of the upper compartment to cushion the upper/lower from other contents. It has worked well so far, with consistent weekly transport.
The one thing I have noticed is, I don’t trust the shoulder strap when it is maxed out with multiple firearms and ammo (I do use the shoulder strap with a lighter load). The hand straps have been solid, however, even when loaded to 30+ pounds.

I recently bought the 511 COVRT M4 bag and am pleased with it so far. It really does a good job of not looking very tactical but still being designed to carry an M4 and a few accessories. I’ve found the top pocket is just about the right size for an Eagle molle dual magazine pouch.
On the downside, I would like to see the bag available in a multitude of colors. Maybe a red or yellow or lime green or something to stay with the sports bag look. Also, if you’ve got a SOPMOD stock and something like an AAC muzzle brake on your rifle, it might be a bit of a stretch. I’ve got one rifle that’s equipped with the AAC Brakeout and the VLTOR A5 buffer tube and it won’t fit. Actually it will fit in the main rifle compartment but only if I don’t put the muzzle inside the built-in muzzle pocket. That’s not really a dig on the bag itself but it could stand to be one or two inches longer. Just something to be aware of if you’ve got a longer carbine.
For just tossing something in your trunk to/from the range (such as apartment dwellers who want to avoid nosy neighbors), the Nike bat bag shown above isn’t going to raise any flags.
I want to check out some of those Timbuk2 bags for a bag you can carry around. Looks like you could set one up with a padded divider to break down a 16" AR. From their product description:

I’ve been using this case/bag now for the past month or so and I really like it. I needed something less obvious to carry my rifle to and from my apartment when going to work/range since I don’t like people knowing I’m police (unless it’s on my terms). I considered a sports equipment bag, but it would look odd carrying a bat bag down to my car every day I go to work, especially the hours I come and go.
But you’re right about the fit. It’s “tight” for a collapsed standard 16in AR.
