Difference between XM856, AE223, XM193, M193, BP223

At Cabelas they have all sorts of .223 ammo but when I look at the Federal branded ones, which is made to military standards (I think). They have all these different types of bullets and I dont cant seem to figure out the difference between them.

XM856, M193, XM193, AE223

M193 is the typical 55gr FMJ we all know and love. XM193 is the same thing but shoots a bit hotter

XM856 is a tracer.

AE223 is a 55gr FMJ…LINK

You would think that there would be other boards on this forum that covers this.

What do yall think is better? I typically buy the PMC Bronze when Cabelas has it for 6.50 for 20 rounds and bc I didnt know the difference between all the rounds other than the Tracer round bc it says Tracer on the box lol. I can get 200 rounds of xm193 for $90 or PMC Bronze for 6.50 is about the best deals they have. They also have 20 rounds of that steel cased Tula shit for 3.99, I always get a few of those incase of zombie attacks and what not.

I pretty much just shoot stuff and hunt small pigs, coyotes, etc.

Go with the least expensive that works for your purpose. There’s no bad ammo on the list.

when im messing around at the range, I shoot the cheap stuff. I ran wolf through a 2 hour class with no problems. I keep good brass for zeroing or doing longer range work.

what about that ss109 xm855?

What about it?

Wrong. Federal 193 is 193 is 193. The only thing the letters designate is the type of box/packaging used.

Have to point out that this isn’t likely correct. Almost certain M193 and XM193 have the same velocity, just that one (XM) didn’t pass some sort of preliminary QC evaluation and was therefore designated XM193.

Could be wrong, as there are several gray areas around XM193. But I have never heard that XM was hotter than M.

I got a tour of LC Ammo Plant a couple months back, pretty interesting. The M193 is not made for US mil anymore, foreign mil sales only. BUT…the govt allows ATK (the contractor) to use the equipment to run off batches of 193 for civ sales if they are meeting the production schedule for gov contract. Same same for M855, wheelbarrows of it going to civ sales.
